The Seine stretches under a misty sky, interrupted by large patches of white and gray ice. On the right, a few figures stand near boats washed up on the snowy bank; on the left, the island of Croissy boils down to a row of dark trees and its reflection. Monet reduces almost the entire scene to values of white, brown and gray to make one feel the silence and cold of winter 1867 -1868.

Look at the work

The patches of ice lead towards a horizon that the mist makes almost invisible

The river occupies the center and foreground. Ice cubes of different sizes are distributed diagonally, separated by gray and calm water. On the right bank, the snow forms a long, clear curve punctuated by stakes, black silhouettes and two boats.

The opposite bank appears as a very low line. The poplars of Croissy Island are reflected vertically in the water, while the buildings of Bougival disappear in the center. A large beige-gray sky absorbs smoke, distant trees and light.

The almost monochrome does not erase the landscape: it makes visible the finest gaps between water, ice, snow and fog.

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

An open composition upstream

Monet looks at the Seine upstream, Croissy Island on the left. The floating plates decrease in size and form a succession of landmarks until the river narrows in the mist.

Two banks treated differently

The left bank is dark, vertical and reflected; the right bank is white, oblique and animated by figures. Their opposition frames the water without producing rigid symmetry.

A first study of the frozen Seine

This painting constitutes one of Monet's first large ice landscapes. The sobriety of the palette and the empty expanse of the sky announce his subsequent research into the debacles of Vétheuil.

The image corresponds to the Louvre Museum's RF 1961 62 inventory and Wildenstein number 105. Its native definition of 1512 × 1200 px was retained during WebP encoding, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

The ice cubes keep irregular contours

Their edges alternate between clear white, gray and melted passages. Shapes that are too sharp or repetitive would cause the impression of floating plates captured at different distances to be lost.

Color02

The sky contains warm shades

Beiges, muted pinks and purple grays temper the cold of the river. This very discreet heat must remain visible without transforming the foggy atmosphere into a sunset.

Matter03

The figures remain tiny but essential

Placed near the boats, they measure the width of the Seine and the size of the ice. Their dark mass is enough; excessive detail would detach them from the shore.

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Signed Claude Monet lower right, this oil on canvas measuring 65 × 81.2 cm was painted during the winter of 1867 -1868. It is kept in the Louvre under the inventory RF 1961 62 and classified Wildenstein 105.

Bougival and Croissy Island

Monet places himself on the bank of Bougival and looks upstream. The island's trees occupy the left, while activities and boats concentrate on the snowy bank on the right.

Winter02

A Seine exceptionally caught by ice

The harsh cold of 1867 -1868 allowed Monet to paint the frozen river for the first time. He favors atmospheric unity and the virtual absence of color over the winter anecdote.

Collection03

Donation Hélène and Victor Lyon

After the Pierre and Paul Bureau collections, the work was purchased by André Schoeller in 1927 then joined the Lyon collection. Given to the State in 1961 with reservation of usufruct, it entered the Louvre in 1977.
