À propos de l’œuvre

La glace sur les plaines de Colombes, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Frost morning between Gennevilliers, Colombes and Bezons · Niigata

La Plaine de Colombes, white jelly W256hand painted reproduction

A wide frost-bleached plain extends under a pale sky, crossed by a long blue-gray shadow. On the right, a few houses and large bare trees mark the side of the path; in the distance, the chimneys of Bezons mark the industrial suburbs. Monet thus unites the atmosphere of a thawing morning with the modern transformation of the surroundings of Paris.

Look at the work

Frost and elongated shadow transform suburban terrain into a field of color

The surface of the foreground is made of small touches of cream, pink, ocher and blue. A cold band starts from the bottom of the canvas, widens then joins the trees and buildings in the distance. It structures the depth while giving a low hour to the light.

The houses on the right alternate red roofs, yellow walls and brown shadows. Their warm colors respond to the earth which reappears under the frost. On the left, the chimneys and light smoke are almost absorbed by the sky, but are enough to place industry in the landscape.

The white of the frost does not erase the color: on the contrary, it reveals blues, pinks and ochres that shadow and thaw distribute throughout the plain.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A shadow as the main axis of perspective

The long blue-gray shape replaces the marked path or river. Its irregular edges lead towards the horizon and separate areas that are still frozen from already warmer lands.

02

An almost empty sky to amplify the cold light

The sky occupies almost half of the painting and presents few contrasts. This restraint moves the trees, roofs and the signature placed at the bottom right forward, without hardening the atmosphere.

03

Modernity relegated but present

The smoke and chimneys of Bezons remain tiny. Monet does not dramatize them: they naturally belong to the panorama observed from Gennevilliers, in the same way as the houses and trees.

The visual corresponds to La Plaine de Colombes, white jelly, inventory OP0364 of the Niigata Prefectural Museum of Modern Art and Wildenstein number 256. The official public domain image is provided in real WebP of 1,600 × 1,171 px.

Composition01

Frost is made up of colorful touches

Whites should remain mixed with beige, pink, blue and earth. A uniform white cover would remove the particular vibration of the thawing soil.

Color02

Shadow retains irregular edges

Its shape expands, tightens and fragments in the grass. It must guide the eye without becoming an opaque geometric band.

Matter03

The houses in the distance remain sharp just enough

Roofs and facades are distinguished by a few warm masses, but their contours blend into the mist. Too much detail would reduce the open scale of the plain.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1873, this oil on canvas measures 52.5 × 72 cm. It is kept in Niigata under the inventory OP0364 and listed Wildenstein 256.

Viewpoint01

The Colombes plain seen from Gennevilliers

The museum notice places Monet on the opposite bank to the suburbs of Argenteuil. He looks at an area that is still poorly constructed, but already connected to the towns and industrial activities of western Paris.

Season02

The beginning of spring after the snow disappears

The museum describes the air of a spring morning when frost still covers the ground. The diversity of touches shows the earth, humidity and remnants of cold rather than an intact coat of snow.

Industry03

The chimneys of Bezons in the distance

Their smoke manifests Monet's attention to signs of industrialization. In the years of Argenteuil, open landscapes, traffic routes and modern activities constantly coexist in his work.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Maintain the long shadow that organizes depth.
  • Vary the whites of the frost with warm and cold shades.
  • Keep trees and houses on the right edge.
  • Leave the Bezons chimneys discreet in the mist.

A palette designed with the room

This light landscape is suitable for a bedroom, living room or office. A bluish gray, light oak or off-white frame accompanies frost; a linen, powder pink or mist blue wall highlights the shadows.
