A wide frost-bleached plain extends under a pale sky, crossed by a long blue-gray shadow. On the right, a few houses and large bare trees mark the side of the path; in the distance, the chimneys of Bezons mark the industrial suburbs. Frost and elongated shadow transform suburban terrain into a field of color

The surface of the foreground is made of small touches of cream, pink, ocher and blue. A cold band starts from the bottom of the canvas, widens then joins the trees and buildings in the distance. It structures the depth while giving a low hour to the light.

The houses on the right alternate red roofs, yellow walls and brown shadows. Their warm colors respond to the earth which reappears under the frost. On the left, the chimneys and light smoke are almost absorbed by the sky, but are enough to place industry in the landscape.

The white of the frost does not erase the color: on the contrary, it reveals blues, pinks and ochres that shadow and thaw distribute throughout the plain.

A shadow as the main axis of perspective

The long blue-gray shape replaces the marked path or river. Its irregular edges lead towards the horizon and separate areas that are still frozen from already warmer lands.

An almost empty sky to amplify the cold light

The sky occupies almost half of the painting and presents few contrasts. This restraint moves the trees, roofs and the signature placed at the bottom right forward, without hardening the atmosphere.

Modernity relegated but present

The smoke and chimneys of Bezons remain tiny. Monet does not dramatize them: they naturally belong to the panorama observed from Gennevilliers, in the same way as the houses and trees.

The houses in the distance remain sharp just enough

Roofs and facades are distinguished by a few warm masses, but their contours blend into the mist. Too much detail would reduce the open scale of the plain.
