Look at the work

The cabin measures the immensity of the cliff and the sea

The building is placed on the upper slope, while a grassy slope descends diagonally towards the water. The coastline and horizon open the composition beyond this steep foreground.

Deaf greens, ochres and browns build the earth; the sea and the sky mix blue, gray and white. The light touches on the cabin are enough to detach it from the landscape.

Modest and almost deserted, the construction nevertheless gives its full scale to the panorama: without it, the cliff would only be an abstract succession of colors.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A diagonal that makes you feel the height

The slope leads the view from the cabin to the sea. Its inclination directly transmits Monet's elevated position on the cliff.

02

A building reduced to a few plans

The roof and walls are simplified but distinct. Monet avoids picturesque detail to maintain priority of light and relief.

03

A precise series from Pourville

W733 belongs to the views of the customs officers' cabin painted in 1882. The pattern changes scale and place depending on the artist's position and the state of the time.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W733 is used. The real WebP measures 433 × 359 px, the best reliable public definition identified for this version, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Respect the small size of the cabin

Enlarging it or specifying it excessively would modify its role as a landmark in the middle of the landscape.

Color02

Maintain the slope in oblique touches

The direction of the brush makes you feel the relief. Too regular flat areas would flatten the cliff.

Matter03

Maintain sea gray blue accord

The water should not become a uniform blue. Its variations reflect the overcast sky and coastal light.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Customs House is an oil on canvas from 1882, 60 × 71 cm, signed and dated lower right, kept in the Newark Museum of Art under number 49.155 and listed Wildenstein 733.

Campaign01

Pourville in 1882

Monet works on the Normandy coast from different points of view and transforms the cabin into a recurring landmark facing variations in sea and light.

Provenance02

Acquired by Durand-Ruel in April 1882

The painting entered the merchant's circuit very early and then joined the museum in 1949 thanks to a donation from Mr. and Mrs. William V. Griffin.

Collection03

Newark Museum of Art

The work is numbered 49.155. Its reference Wildenstein 733 prevents it from being confused with the other cabins painted the same year.

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The cabin at the top of the slope
  • The diagonal of the cliff
  • The gray-blue sea on the horizon
