À propos de l’œuvre

Tête de femme, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · March-April 1885 · Nuenen

Woman's head with dark headdress, F153Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A woman seen in profile stands out against a pale blue-green background. His headdress and jacket form a large, almost black mass; the face, painted brown and green, is bordered by Prussian blue lines which make the forehead, nose and chin immediately readable.

Look at the work

A dark profile projects in front of an almost luminous background

The cap occupies the upper left corner and goes down to the nape of the neck. Its volume absorbs a large part of the light, while the contour of the face draws a continuous line from the forehead to the mouth.

The long, light neck is placed far back under the cheek. This construction moves the head to the right and reinforces the tension of the profile, although the format measures only 25.1 cm high.

Head of a Woman with a Dark Headdress F153/JH587 is a 25.1 × 19 cm oil on canvas painted in Nuenen in March-April 1885. The original is kept at the Kroeller-Müller Museum under number KM 107.308.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh explores here a darkness that remains colorful. Browns, greens and Prussian blue replace pure black and give dark shapes several depths.

01

Prussian blue reinforces the outline of the profile

It appears in the thick lines of the forehead, nose, lips and jaw. This cool blue detaches brown skin from the lighter background.

02

Ear and chin receive rare pink accents

These warm touches are small but decisive. They liven up the face without breaking the restrained range of green, brown and blue.

03

Deliberately flat shapes give strength to the silhouette

The modeling remains basic and certain shadows are heavily placed. The head thus advances as a compact shape rather than as a meticulously finished volume.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The references F153/JH587, the number KM 107.308 and the small format of 25.1 × 19 cm precisely identify this profile study.

Color

Darkness is constructed with several pigments

The museum highlights Prussian blue in the contours, different browns for the skin, as well as green and brown in the jacket and headdress.

Exercise

The canvas can be understood as a search for dark tones

At this time, Van Gogh defended a painting where the shadow remained colorful. This head allows him to experience this idea on a very concentrated subject.

Execution

The head appears to have been put in place quickly

The shapes remain flat and certain proportions are not corrected. This franchise retains the energy of the study and avoids a finish that is too smooth.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the straight profile, the large colored black headdress, the Prussian blue contours, the light neck placed back and the small pink touches of the ear and chin.

  • The almost black mass of the headdress at the top left
  • The blue line that follows the forehead and nose
  • Little pink accent on the ear
  • The light neck that visually pushes the head forward
  • The blue-green background brushed around the profile
