Reproduction details

Claude Monet · 1897 · Musée d'Orsay MNR 223 · W1430

Fécamp Cliff, Orsay MNR 223hand painted reproduction

The sea occupies the central opening and almost merges with a very clear sky. The cliffs enter the composition from the lower angles, then a distant coast appears on the right in the mist. Monet reduces the landscape of Fécamp to very pale blues, greens and pinks, as if the humid light dissolved the material.

Look at the work

Two slopes frame a milky sea where the distant coast and the sky seem on the verge of disappearing

The cliff on the right is the main mass. It descends towards the center in beige, green, pink and mauve planes, without dark outline. Opposite, a lower relief enters from the left and creates a passage towards the body of water.

The sky and the sea share almost identical values. Only the more horizontal touches of the water and a few more intense blues allow them to be distinguished. This economy of contrast gives the canvas its foggy climate.

The monumental subject becomes almost immaterial: the cliff remains in its colors, but the air gradually erases its shape.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Modern framing from the top of the cliffs

The foreground is cut by the lower edges and the sea opens in the center. This plunging construction gives the viewer a feeling of height without drawn perspective.

02

Light that reduces contrast

The blues, pinks and creams of the sky repeat in the water and rock. Reproduction must retain these subtle deviations rather than artificially strengthening the coast.

03

A date published with a documentary nuance

The Musée d'Orsay presents the work under the date 1897 and specifies that Daniel Wildenstein places it in 1896. The sheet follows the museum dating while retaining this reference point.

The museum spring measures 8,581 × 5,817 px. It was reduced to 5,000 × 3,389 px for Shopify then converted into a real WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Two cliffs to open the center

The lateral masses must not meet. Their interval makes the sea breathe and leads the gaze to the distant coast.

Color02

A palette of colorful mist

Pale blue, pink, mauve, soft green and cream build the climate. Even the lightest passages must remain nuanced.

Matter03

Quick and light touches

The rock receives fragmented gestures, while the sky and the sea are more linked. Their difference is enough to separate the planes.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This information concerns Falaise de Fécamp, Musée d'Orsay, MNR 223 and Wildenstein 1430.

Identification01

MNR 223, Wildenstein 1430

Status02

A work entrusted to the custody of national museums

Found in Germany after the Second World War, the painting was attributed to national museums in 1950. It falls under the National Recovery Museums system.

Marks03

A signature and a date erased

The Rose-Valland base indicates at the bottom right the traces of a signature and the date "Claude Monet. 97", now erased.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version of the Musée d'Orsay, MNR 223 and W1430
  • The original horizontal format of 65 × 100 cm
  • The marine center kept open between the two slopes
  • The mist rendered by subtle deviations rather than uniform white
