Claude Monet · A Norman street under an overcast sky · Clark Art Institute

Street in Sainte-Adresse W98hand painted reproduction

An unpaved street descends towards the church of Sainte-Adresse, whose dark spire cuts out a gray-blue sky. Two adults and a child walk away in the center, framed by walls, low houses and large autumn trees. Monet here abandons the dazzling seascapes of the same living room for an ordinary, vertical and deliberately fresh motif, built around an irregular perspective.

Look at the work

The road plunges and bends towards a church spire kept sharp in the sky

The clear roadway starts from the lower edge and descends irregularly between two walls. On the left, a mass of trees occupies almost the entire height; on the right, gray and brown facades overlap. The characters are at the point where the road begins to narrow.

The church dominates the middle of the composition, but its bell tower is not exactly centered. Its dark spire is the sharpest outline of the canvas. Further on, the trees and roofs become diffuse, while the sky is constructed by a multitude of small blue and gray touches.

The apparent banality of the street becomes a pictorial test: slopes, walls and buildings refuse an easy perspective, and Monet makes it precisely the driving force of the painting.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A complex rather than regular perspective

The road goes down, narrows then turns out of sight. The walls and roofs do not converge towards a single point; their shifts give the village a lived and slightly unstable structure.

02

A deliberately limited palette

The Clark catalog highlights cold tones and overcast weather. Monet contrasts the pale roadway with the dark foliage, then subtly varies the grays from one wall, roof or cloud to another.

03

Buildings and vegetation closely mixed

Trees, gardens, walls and houses overlap without clear separation. This juxtaposition of the natural and the built announces concerns that Monet will develop in suburban landscapes.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The image corresponds to the Clark Art Institute's 1955.523 inventory and Wildenstein number 98. The high definition file was reduced to 2,201 × 3,000 px then encoded in WebP.

Composition01

The arrow remains more precise than its surroundings

Its dark edge stands out against the clouds, while the horizon and the road are more flexible. This change in sharpness organizes depth without spectacular contrast.

Color02

Pavement is not a white surface

Beiges, grays, blues and touches of earth describe its ruts and its slope. A uniform color would remove the changes in plan essential to the composition.

Matter03

Characters give scale without forming a portrait

The group is described by some dark and light silhouettes. Their march towards the church animates the retreat of the street, but their identity is not the subject of the painting.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Signed Claude Monet lower left, this oil on canvas from 1867 measures 80 × 59.2 cm. It belongs to the Clark Art Institute under the 1955.523 inventory and bears the Wildenstein number 98.

Stay01

Holy Address during the summer and fall of 1867

Monet lives in a house used by his aunt on the way to the Lighthouses. He then painted seascapes, gardens and street views, looking for patterns adapted to the changing weather.

Identification02

A church of Sainte-Adresse disappeared in 1878

Long titled Rue à Fécamp, the view is located with certainty in Sainte-Adresse thanks to the comparison of old photographs and the spire of the church, demolished a decade after the painting.

Collection03

Acquired by Sterling and Francine Clark in 1952

After several European and American collections, the work passed through Knoedler in New York. Robert Sterling Clark bought it on May 5, 1952; she joined the institute when it opened in 1955.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Maintain irregular perspective of the road.
  • Keep the arrow sharp on the overcast sky.
  • Differentiate between each gray of walls and roofs.
  • Preserve characters as small measures of space.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This vertical format is suitable for an entrance, desk or library. A smoky oak, slate gray or patinated bronze frame accompanies Norman tones; soft side light brings out the modulations of the sky.
