Look at the work

A crowd pressed against the foreground

The space is almost entirely filled by dancers and spectators. The high horizon leaves only a strip of decorated wall and a row of lamps, while the bodies fit together without breathing.

White buns and headdresses draw repeated curves in the foreground. Dark blues surround the silhouettes, then the yellows of the lamps and dresses pass through the crowd like shards.

The Musée d'Orsay brings this composition closer to the compartmentalism and synthetism of Gauguin, with whom Van Gogh then worked in Arles. The flattening and high framing also testify to his interest in Japanese prints.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The painting from the Musée d'Orsay, RF 1950 9, measures 65 × 85.5 cm and bears the references F547/JH1652.

01

Compressed depth

The elevated viewpoint and the accumulation of silhouettes bring the room to the surface. The crowd almost becomes a continuous decorative motif.

02

Curves versus angles

The round hairstyles of the Arlesiennes respond to the luminous globes, while the balustrade and the bands of the wall introduce more rigid diagonals.

03

Madame Roulin on the right

The face turned towards us, near the right edge, breaks the collective movement and gives the scene a note of worry and confinement.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The notice from the Musée d'Orsay probably associates the stage with the Folies-Arlésiennes on Boulevard des Lices.

Location

Probably the Folies-Arlésiennes

The establishment on Boulevard des Lices hosted balls and shows. Its identification remains proposed by the museum without being absolutely certain.

Collaboration

Van Gogh in contact with Gauguin

In December 1888, the two artists briefly resumed joint work; Van Gogh here adopts large surrounded areas and a synthetic composition.

Japonism

A very tough horizon

The plunging framing, cut-out shapes and decorative repetitions recall the solutions that Van Gogh admired in Japanese prints.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the density of the crowd, the blue-black contours and the rhythm of the headdresses without confusing the characters or losing Madame Roulin at the right edge.

  • The row of yellow globes
  • Repeated white headdresses
  • The silhouettes surrounded by blue
  • Madame Roulin on the right edge
  • The decorative frieze above the crowd
