Monet paints less of a portrait of a person than that of a garden that has reached full flowering.

Camille appears at the edge of a garden which becomes the real subject

Camille's light silhouette runs along the left edge, under a large tree whose trunk and branches form a vault. Her face and dress are treated with quick touches; she never completely detaches herself from the green shadow that surrounds her.

The heart of the painting is occupied by an almost triangular, dense and very dark massif, strewn with red flowers. Higher up, the light stems of hollyhocks overlap the house. The facade, the roof and the sky are only visible through this plant network.

The character gives the scale of the garden, but the light, flowers and foliage impose their own presence.

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

A vertical format constructed by three floors

The path and low flowers occupy the lower part, the large massif concentrates the gaze in the center, then the tree, the hollyhocks and the roof extend the momentum upwards.

Greens lit by their complements

Monet contrasts the greens of the foliage with the reds, pinks and oranges of the flowers. These tiny accents make the flower bed vibrate without it being necessary to draw each petal.

A surface animated by discontinuous touches

The Met describes colorful brushstrokes that seem to make the canvas pulse. In the facade as in the leaves, the juxtaposed colors restore the shine of summer rather than a smooth pattern.

Its deep green contains bluish blacks, yellows, reds and small light reserves. These breaks maintain the feeling of depth.

Camille's dress belongs to the shadows

Its gray, blue, mauve and white reflect the colors of the garden. An overly clear outline would isolate the figure and modify the balance desired by Monet.

Matter03

The house remains a filtered presence

Cream pink walls and green shutters appear between the stems. They situate the scene without competing with the monumental bouquet of hollyhocks.

This oil on canvas from 1876 measures 81.6 × 60 cm. It is kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art under inventory 2000.93.1 and corresponds to Wildenstein number 410.

Series01

At least ten views of the house and garden in 1876

The Met indicates that Monet painted at least ten paintings that year of the house he rented in Argenteuil and its garden. This version was probably executed in June, at the time of full flowering.

Subject02

Camille becomes secondary to hollyhocks

The museum notice highlights the almost incidental role of Madame Monet. Its silhouette provides a human counterpoint to the powerful bouquet that dominates the middle of the composition.

Collection03

The gift Walter H. and Leonore Annenberg

The work entered the Met collections with the gift Walter H. and Leonore Annenberg in 2000, supplemented by the bequest of Walter H. Annenberg in 2002.
