Fragile face amidst shifting light

Camille's face occupies the upper left part of the center. The closed eyes, darkened features and linen framing the head are constructed in a tight range of purple, brown and blue gray; no hard line separates the skin from the veils.

The sheets go diagonally to the right and unfold in the lower half. They are never simply white: lilac, pink, blue, earth red and cream overlap in broad gestures. The black signature, lower right, provides one of the few firm accents.

The subject imposes silence, but the painting remains active: the color passes through the veils and sheets like a light that continues to change.
