Camille Doncieux, Monet's companion and then wife, turns her back on the viewer and tilts her face slightly. Her bright green striped silk dress sweeps the floor, while a black velvet jacket lined with fur cuts the bust in front of a heavy brown curtain. Monet gives the life-size portrait the momentum of a moment captured in passing.
Look at the work
Camille stands three-quarters behind, her head turned to the right. A dark hat decorated with feathers frames his profile; a gloved hand rises near the collar. The black jacket, trimmed with brown fur on the wrists, neckline and hem, concentrates the deepest values.
The green skirt descends in large striped folds then extends with a left-hand train. The red-brown curtain absorbs almost the entire background, leaving only a strip of ocher floor. The luminous greens of silk thus seem to emerge from the shadows.
The face is not the only center of the portrait: fashion, the material of the fabrics and the movement of the body tell as much as the identity of the model.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Monet undertook Camille after understanding that his immense Déjeuner sur l'herbe would not be ready for the Salon of 1866. He produced in a short time this monumental portrait, accepted and noticed by critics.
The Kunsthalle brings together the pose and outfit of fashion illustrations and photographs in business card format. Camille embodies less of a conventional psychological portrait than the mobile figure of an elegant Parisian.
Glossy silk, dark velvet, fur, leather gloves and matte curtain fabric require different touches. Their opposition gives the painting its physical presence and prevents the large dark surface from appearing uniform.

The visual corresponds to Camille, inventory 298-1906/1 of the Kunsthalle Bremen and Wildenstein number 65. The reproduction of 3,800 × 5,856 px was reduced to 1,947 × 3,000 px then encoded as a real WebP, without oversampling.
Emerald, bluish green, black and yellow highlights build silk. Repeating the same shade would remove the volume and moving shine of the garment.
It serves as a dark background, but its vertical folds remain legible. These variations detach the silhouette while maintaining an enveloping atmosphere.
Fauvist accents circulate from the hat to the sleeves then to the hem. Their irregular design softens the border between the black jacket and other materials.
Documented benchmarks
Signed and dated Claude Monet 1866 lower right, this oil on canvas measures 231 × 151 cm. It is kept at the Kunsthalle Bremen under inventory 298-1906/1 and classified Wildenstein 65.
Camille became the young painter's main model and then appeared in numerous portraits and outdoor scenes. The couple married in 1870 and had two sons, Jean and Michel.
The work received a favorable reception, notably from Émile Zola who praised the freshness of the painting. The proximity of the names Monet and Manet also causes confusion which the press echoes.
The museum purchased the painting with the support of Galerieverein. It bears inventory 298-1906/1 and remains one of the masterpieces of the French collection of the Kunsthalle.
