A sunken path that leads the eye to the sea

The trail begins largely at the lower edge, narrows in the center then dives behind the trees. The left embankment descends towards the sea; the one on the right rises sharply. Their diagonals form an X-shaped composition around the central passage.

The herbs combine straw yellow, sage green, orange and purple. The trees form a denser blue-green mass, contrasting with the milky sky and turquoise-gray sea. On the way, pink and blue shadows alternate with the lit areas.

No figure tells the journey: the path itself becomes the invitation, opening the foreground then slipping away as it reaches the sea.

A character would have given an anecdote and an immediate scale. Without human presence, the gaze directly feels the slope, the tightening and the promised opening towards the coast.

Materials distinguished by the touch

Short, dry lines in the grass, thicker touches in the trees and horizontal passages in the sea make you feel three different textures without rigid contours.

Keep pink and blue shadows on the sand

These alternating cold and warm colors reflect the light filtered by the vegetation. A uniform beige path would lose the vibration of W762.

Location01

La Cavée descends from the cliffs towards Pourville beach

Monet painted several views of this steep path during his Norman campaign of 1882. It varied the point of observation, the orientation of the format and the way in which the sea appeared at the outlet.

Group02

Four Chemins de La Cavée sold in Durand-Ruel

A letter documented by the MFA indicates that Monet sold four paintings bearing this title to the Durand-Ruel gallery on October 10, 1882; the gallery sold them in 1883.

The legacy of Susan Mason Loring

The painting enters the Museum of Fine Arts thanks to the bequest of Mrs. Susan Mason Loring. It bears the number 24.1755 and the signature Claude Monet 82 at the bottom right.
