The exceptionally elongated format gives the pattern the breadth of a panorama and transforms the flowers into a sheet of colorful touches. Painted in 1887, this oil on canvas measuring 45 × 100 cm is kept at the Marmottan Monet museum under number 5172 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1137.

A field of flowers spread like a luminous frieze

The sky occupies a narrow strip in the upper part, separated from the field by a dark and almost continuous edge. This organization into three horizontal strata gives a very stable basis to the composition, while the oblique touches of herbs and flowers enliven the entire surface.

In the foreground, bright yellows mingle with blues, purples and greens. The touches become smaller as you approach the edge, creating depth without paths or architecture. The pinkish and bluish grays of the sky balance the intensity of the field.

Monet does not choose an isolated flower: he paints the experience of an entire field, where color, distance and brush movement replace botanical detail.
