Artwork description
Vincent van Gogh · Summer 1887 · Asnières-sur-Seine
From the bank of Asnières, Van Gogh displays a wide view of the Seine. The orange-red canoes follow the bank diagonally, while the blue water and cloudy sky open up an exceptionally vast space.
Look at the work
The boats run from the lower left corner to the moored group on the right. This colorful chain leads the eye along the clear slope without closing the river.
The sky takes up almost half of the canvas. Its long touches of blue, gray and white are reflected in the water, where horizontal green and turquoise markings suggest the current.
Painted in Paris during the summer of 1887, this 52 × 65 cm oil on canvas is F300/JH1275. It remains in a private collection.
Composition, touch and color
The moored boats combine panoramic construction with a still experimental touch. The boats are drawn by colorful contours, while the sky and water remain freer.
It separates the river from the path while giving rapid depth to successive canoes.
Hulls, masts and small orange pennants stand out against the cold expanse of the river.
Clear smears allow the preparation of the canvas to breathe and amplify the sensation of air.
Documented benchmarks
The Christie's notice identifies F300/JH1275 as one of three elements of the triptych "Bord de la Seine à Asnières" documented in Theo van Gogh's inventory.
F300 was associated with the Bridges on the Seine F301 from the Bührle Collection and the Mermaid Restaurant F312 from the Ashmolean Museum.
Recent research indicates that Van Gogh traced several rectangles along the same length of canvas before separating the compositions.
The painting passed from Theo and Jo van Gogh-Bonger to the merchant Vollard in 1897, then entered British collections early.
Your reproduction
The copy must preserve the space of the sky, the horizontal reflections, the diagonal of the bank and the exact succession of canoes without saturating the blues.
