Two men occupy a small sailboat moored near a pontoon. Behind them, two large white sails cut almost the entire surface and only reveal trees, a pink house and other boats. Monet chooses a daring framing: the nautical leisure is not told from a distance, it emerges in the foreground through the sail, the mast, the hull and their reflections.

The white sails transform a canoeing scene into an almost abstract composition

The main sail climbs from the left corner and fills much of the picture. Its orange mast crosses the stage vertically. At the foot of this light shape, a seated man and another standing regulate the boat; their bodies give human measure to the immense canvas triangle.

A second sail occupies the center right, in front of two small sailboats further away. The tree-lined bank forms a low horizontal band and a pink house stands out on the right. The pontoon in the foreground, the white birds and the orange and blue reflections animate the surface of the water.

By devoting almost two thirds of the canvas to white sails, Monet makes a leisure motif a radical experience of surface, light and scale.

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

A framing dominated by sails

The nearest sail is cut by the upper and left edges, making it appear as if it extends out of the board. The second repeats its triangle on another scale and immediately digs into the depth.

The mast as a colored axis

The orange vertical of the mast shares the light surface and is reflected in the water. It connects the sky, the boaters, the hull and the foreground, while providing a warm contrast in the middle of the blues.

Characters absorbed in nautical activity

The two men do not pose. Their movements are directed towards the ropes and the boat. Monet makes them elements of modern composition, in the same way as the sails, the pontoon and the boats at the bottom.

The whites are crossed with yellow, gray and blue depending on the folds and the light. The variations remain slight in order to maintain the brilliance which dominates the entire scene.

The hat, jacket and inclination of each boater are enough to distinguish their actions. Excessive precision would detach them from the general touch.

Water brings together different directions

Horizontal keys for current, vertical for mast reflections and oblique under hulls intersect. Their diversity produces vibration without losing the structure of the pool.
