Look at the work

The mistral can be read in the inclination of the trees and the colorful surface of the sea

The first plant plane starts from the lower edge and rises to the left of the center. The fine trunks, oblique branches and stretched foliage give a direction to the wind. A small light sail appears beyond, isolated in the maritime space.

Olive green, dark blue, purple and brown enliven the trees; turquoise, cobalt and white fragment the sea. The distant mountains are painted in much lighter pinks and blues, so that depth arises mainly from a change in temperature and intensity.

Monet does not paint the wind as an invisible event: he makes it perceptible by the direction of the branches, the nervousness of the keys and the contrast between the first dry plane and the moving sea.

The blues, greens and whites remain distinct. Their irregular rhythm suggests a wind-lift surface rather than a calm, reflective body of water.

Alps transformed into atmospheric sail

The mountain range is visible but deliberately not very contrasting. Monet integrates it into the sky to accentuate the colorful proximity of the trees and the distance from the continent.
