Look at the work

A clear road opens the rocky coast towards Menton and the Alps

The path starts from the left foreground and narrows between the rocks. The pines form a dark screen, but their openings reveal the city and the blue sea.

The mountains occupy the top of the canvas with very little material. Monet maintains areas of clear preparation and indicates clouds and reliefs with a few touches of blue, pink and gray.

W897 contrasts the tactile density of the shore with the almost reserved air of the sky: depth depends as much on matter as on perspective.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A view of the eastern slope

The view crosses the bay from Cape Martin towards Menton and the Alps. The curve of the path organizes this movement from near to far.

02

A sky left largely in reserve

The MFA emphasizes the paint economy in the upper part. A few lines are enough to suggest mountains and clouds without weighing down the atmosphere.

03

Version 25.128

The 67.2 × 81.6 cm format, the Boston Museum inventory and Wildenstein 897 distinguish this view from the group painted in April 1884.

Composition01

A very clear path diagonal

The pink of the trail must retain variations of blue, ocher and white to remain integrated into the rocks.

Color02

Cooled plans towards the Alps

The warm, contrasting colors in the foreground become bluer and lighter as the landscape recedes.

Matter03

A deliberately unequal material

The rocks and trees are worked in visible touches, while the sky retains a thin layer and reserves.
