Carafe et plat aux agrumes, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · February -March 1887 · Paris

Carafe and citrus dish, F340Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A glass carafe stands behind a dish loaded with lemons and oranges, on a turquoise table seen from a deep dive. The striped wallpaper, the reflections of the carafe and the green signature make up a particularly ambitious still life.

Look at the work

Transparent glass becomes the center of a patterned decor

The carafe occupies the vertical axis, from the blue-gray base to the large cap. Its contours split into red, green, white and blue lines to suggest both the thickness of the glass and the reflected colors.

The dish is folded towards the viewer and the citrus fruits seem to slide towards the lower edge. Behind them, the strips of wallpaper alternate geometric patterns, small touches and vertical red lines.

Carafe and citrus dish F340/JH1239 is a 46.3 × 38.4 cm oil on canvas painted in Paris in February - March 1887. It is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under number s0020V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh deliberately accumulates difficulties: transparency, reflections, background patterns and inclined perspective. The composition remains readable thanks to the axis of the carafe and the clear circle of the dish.

01

The carafe is constructed by the colors it reflects

Instead of just gray glass, Van Gogh superimposes blue, green, pink and white. The wallpaper patterns seem to run through some areas and disappear behind others.

02

The table top is deliberately straightened

Its very inclined perspective brings the dish closer to the viewer. The museum connects this choice to the strong diagonals of the Japanese prints that Van Gogh studied in Paris.

03

Citrus fruits concentrate the hottest yolks

Lemon, orange, ocher and olive green differentiate each fruit. The turquoise background and blue shadows reinforce their luminosity.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F340/JH1239, inventory s0020V1962 and dimensions 46.3 × 38.4 cm identify this signed and dated Parisian still life.

Challenge

Painting the glass was deliberately difficult

Van Gogh adds decorative wallpaper to the transparency of the carafe. It must therefore represent the numerous colored reflections visible in the object.

Japan

The inclined table comes from his interest in prints

The perspective is not clumsy: it responds to the vigorous diagonals of Japanese engravings, the construction of which Van Gogh then sought to understand.

Signature

Van Gogh signs and dates a work with which he is satisfied

The museum recalls that it reserved this gesture for certain paintings. The green signature "Vincent 87" appears clearly in the lower right corner.

  • Red and green reflections in the body of the carafe
  • Yellow, orange and olive citrus fruits on the dish
