Artwork description
Vincent van Gogh · End of May 1890 · Chaponval, Auvers-sur-Oise, France
Behind a stone wall and flower gardens, several houses in Chaponval tighten their roofs with tiles and thatch. Van Gogh differentiates each material with precise brush direction, then vibrates trees, hedges and flowers around the light facades.
Look at the work
The central house has a white facade, blue shutters and a purple-blue roof painted in horizontal bands. To the left and behind it, darker thatched roofs descend in oblique touches. The chimneys cut out the strip of lilac gray sky.
A stone wall runs through the entire foreground. Above, hedges, vegetable gardens and red flowers create several plant bands. The trees at the bottom are constructed by green and purple curves which contrast with the geometry of the buildings.
The composition contrasts the stability of walls and facades with the continuous movement of roofs, trees and gardens.
Composition, touch and color
The 1935.5 painting can be recognized by its white house with its blue roof, the long stone wall, the two fireplaces and the tiered gardens of Chaponval.
The Toledo Museum highlights the side features of the tiled roof and the descending features of the thatches. The material of the building becomes readable by the direction of the key alone.
Wall, gardens, facades, roofs and trees form superimposed strips. Despite their density, the levels remain clear thanks to changes in color and orientation.
A few poppies and red flowers punctuate the bottom of the painting. These little warm accents make the eye circulate in front of the large green and blue ensembles.
