At dawn, the bottom of the cathedral remains brown and blue while a yellow light begins to reach the upper reliefs. The three portals remain deeply shaded, but the pinnacles are already gaining sharpness. Monet thus records a moment of transition, when the stone seems to gradually emerge from the night.

The morning light descends on a facade still plunged into shadow

The facade is cut on the sides and at the top, making it almost frontal. The large central bay and the gable form the main axis. In the lower part, the red-brown portals sink into a dark area which contrasts with the gray yellows at the top.

The keys do not obediently follow each sculpture. They intersect, thicken and create an optically vibrant surface. The local tones of the stone transform on morning contact into gray, blue, ocher, pale yellow and mauve.

W1357 shows light as a progressive event: the summit awakens while the portals still retain the depth of the night.

The Klassik Stiftung emphasizes that this version represents a very early hour. The intensity increases in the upper parts of the facade, while the gates and the square still remain in shadow.

The surface vibrates with impasto

Monet uses thick paint and short crossed touches. From a distance, they recompose the Gothic portal; up close, they make the facade an autonomous field of material and color.

A pioneering purchase for Weimar

Presented during the first Monet exhibition in Germany organized by Harry Graf Kessler in 1905, the painting was then acquired for the Grand Ducal Museum. This early entry demonstrates an exceptional commitment to impressionism.

Browns give weight to the bottom of the facade. The blues and yellows mingle in the upper parts, without separating into strict shadow and light.

The rose window, arches and statues are not drawn one by one. The relief arises from changes in density and direction of the key, essential to preserve in a painted reproduction.

This oil on canvas measures 100 × 65 cm. Started in front of the motif in 1893, it bears, like the other completed versions, the date 1894 and the Wildenstein number 1357.

The painting belongs to the Weimar collections. Its purchase in 1905, in the context of Monet's first German exhibition, constituted a particularly innovative decision for a German museum.

The first minutes of the morning

The top of the facade already receives light, but the portals remain in shadow. This opposition distinguishes the Weimar version from Cathedrals painted in direct sunlight or fog.
