In the first minutes of the morning, the facade of Rouen is covered in pink, purple and blue. The sun does not yet reach the stone directly: diffused light slowly reveals the sculptures, while the large portal remains dark. This version, presented by Monet at Durand-Ruel in 1895, is one of the Cathedrals where the morning atmosphere seems the most unified.
Look at the work
The Saint-Romain tower stands on the left like a large purple mass. The central portal, the rose window and the pinnacles appear in the middle, while a fragment of a tower closes the right edge. The very close framing gives the facade an almost tactile presence.
Roses are never isolated: they mingle with blues, lilacs and warm grays. The top receives more light, but no sharp shine breaks the unit. The purple-brown portals anchor the composition and accentuate the delicacy of dawn.
W1353 does not paint a pink stone: it paints the moment when the morning air transforms the entire facade into colorful harmony.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The Goulandris Foundation emphasizes the light of the early hours, still diffuse and without direct sunlight on the facade. This condition allows Monet to leave many details legible while unifying the monument with color.
The painting appears under number 15 in the Monet exhibition organized by Durand-Ruel in Paris. It therefore belongs to the group of twenty Cathedrals that the artist considered sufficiently accomplished to be compared together.
In this series, Monet does not seek a definitive representation of Notre-Dame de Rouen. The stable monument serves to measure the transformations of air, light and one's own perception.

Only one reference image is used: the official color file of the Goulandris Foundation, converted into a real WebP of 644 × 1000 px, preserved in its native definition without artificial enlargement.
The left tower, the central portal and the dark band on the right edge form the structure. Their limits must remain flexible so that the atmosphere circulates over the entire surface.
The dominant pink arises from the mixture, not from a uniform flatness. Blues cool the shadows and browns give depth to the openings.
Light areas remain slightly colored. Reproduction should avoid pure whites or too intense yellows, which would transform dawn into full sun.

The Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation keeps this version in Athens; the catalog raisonné identifies it under the number Wildenstein 1353.
This oil on canvas from 1894 measures 100.3 × 65.5 cm. It is signed and dated lower left and bears the number Wildenstein 1353.
After several private collections and visits to Durand-Ruel, the painting joined the Foundation's collection. It is presented at the Athens Museum, on the first floor.
Monet includes this version in the founding presentation of twenty Cathedrals. The public could follow the metamorphoses of the same portal from morning to evening.
