Look at the work

A Gothic facade changed into a wall of light

Monet frames the portal very closely: the towers emerge from the field and the facade almost completely fills the canvas. The rose, the three portals and the vertical lines of the buttresses serve as landmarks, but no outline permanently closes the shapes.

The reliefs are constructed with touches of cream, pale yellow, pink and lilac. In the hollows, cold blues thicken the shadows. The light therefore does not cover a preliminary design: it itself produces the volume of the monument.

In W1324, the stone appears solid from a distance then unravels, as you approach, into a mosaic of luminous touches.

The National Gallery of Art documents an oil on canvas measuring 100.1 × 65.8 cm, signed and dated "Claude Monet 94" at the bottom right. The catalog raisonné identifies it as Wildenstein 1324.

A work facing the gate

Monet paints the cathedral from rented rooms in front of the facade. This close-up point of view explains the frontal framing and the impossibility of seeing the building as a whole.

A series revealed in 1895

After campaigns in Rouen and revivals in his workshop in Giverny, Monet presented twenty Cathedrals at Durand-Ruel in May 1895. Each painting isolates a particular state of light.

A discontinuous matter

The impastos follow niches, pinnacles and arches without drawing them mechanically. Reproduction must preserve this irregular vibration rather than smooth the surface.
