Look at the work

The Gothic stone crossed by a blue and gold light

The Saint-Romain tower rises to the left while the main portal opens in the center right. The lit parts are advanced in creamy yellow; the hollows become brown, midnight blue and purple. Some urban shapes at the bottom of the canvas give the scale of the monument.

The blue sky visible in the cutouts of the facade reinforces the warmth of the reliefs. Monet, however, does not list the sculptures: he makes them appear with small thick touches whose directions follow then interrupt the architecture.

W1360 gets its brilliance from the contrast between a golden stone and blue shadows which retain all the depth of the portal.

A blue and gold harmony

The Musée d'Orsay preserves the painting under the main title Le Portail et la Tour Saint-Romain, full sun and the other title Harmonie bleue et or. It measures 107 × 73.5 cm.

A work painted in 1893 and dated 94

The notice dates the execution from 1893 and notes the signature "Claude Monet 94" at the bottom left. Like other Cathedrals, the canvas is worked on the motif then taken up before its public presentation.

From Camondo to national collections

Count Isaac de Camondo acquired the work from Monet in September 1894. His legacy was accepted by the State in 1911; the painting joined the Musée d'Orsay in 1986 after the Louvre and the Jeu de Paume.

Tower, portal and blue sky

The asymmetry between the upper mass on the left and the central gate must be preserved. Sky openings prevent the facade from becoming a uniform wall.

Ivory, golden yellow, blue and purple brown

Warm tones belong to reliefs in direct sunlight. Blues and browns concentrate the shadows; their contrast must remain strong without hardening every detail.

Matter03

A material that catches the light

The clear impastos give the stone a tactile presence. The reproduction must retain their irregularities, because they are what make the facade vibrate in hindsight.

Acquired directly from Monet by Isaac de Camondo in 1894, it entered the national collections through his legacy of 1911 and was assigned to the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.

The painting is among the twenty Cathedrals presented in Paris in 1895. Their hanging made it possible to compare the changing effects on the same monument.
