The western facade of Rouen Cathedral fills almost the entire field. Under cold late-day light, the portals darken while the pinnacles dissolve into blues, mauves and rare peach accents. Monet does not describe stone by stone: he transforms the monument into a vibrant surface where the atmosphere becomes the real subject.
Look at the work
The framing cuts the towers and brutally brings the viewer closer to the facade. The large central bay, the gable and the three portals maintain the structure, but their contours are continually interrupted by the touch. The architectural mass appears both imposing and unstable.
Low areas sink into cold purples and browns. Higher up, light blue, cream and pink passages capture the last luminous effects. This vertical progression makes you feel a precise hour without resorting to an extended sky or an urban anecdote.
In W1351, the cathedral remains monumental from afar and is unraveled, up close, into a mosaic of color and material.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Monet worked in front of Notre-Dame de Rouen in 1892 and 1893, changing canvas when the light changed. He then took up the works in Giverny and dates this version from 1894 exhibited with nineteen other Cathedrals at Durand-Ruel in 1895.
The National Gallery of Art also retains a facade bathed in sunshine. Here, the absence of clear blue sky and the shadow that reaches the portals produce a more restrained climate: the stone becomes mauve, blue and brown rather than golden.
The impasto evokes the roughness of Gothic sculptures. However, the accumulation of touches absorbs details and reminds us that the canvas records a moving perception, not an exact architectural elevation.

Only one reference image is used: the open file from the National Gallery of Art, converted into a real WebP of 2,587 × 4,000 px, without artificial enlargement.
The large dark opening stabilizes the composition. Around it, the gable, the rosette and the pinnacles are read in fragments, which allows the architecture to be preserved without hardening the contours.
Cool tones dominate, but small warm touches avoid monotony. They should remain scattered on the projections rather than forming a uniform light.
The material is constructed by thick marks, sometimes vertical, sometimes oblique. Reproduction must preserve their variety so that the facade appears vibrant at a short distance and consistent with hindsight.

The National Gallery of Art documents this version under inventory 1963.10.49; the catalog raisonné gives it the Wildenstein number 1351.
This oil on canvas from 1894 measures 100.1 × 65.9 cm. Monet signed and dated it lower left; it corresponds to number 1351 of the Wildenstein catalog.
Acquired by Chester Dale in 1935, the painting entered the National Gallery of Art by bequest in 1963. It is now presented in Washington with another version in full sun.
Monet selects twenty views for the Durand-Ruel exhibition. Their rapprochement made it possible to compare the transformations of the same building under different times and atmospheric conditions.
