At dawn, the facade of Rouen Cathedral remains almost entirely blue. However, a pink and cream light begins to touch the tower and the upper reliefs. The portals remain plunged into deep shadow: Monet captures precisely the moment when the monument leaves the night without yet being overcome by broad daylight.

Look at the work

The first pink light passes through a cathedral that is still blue at night

The tower occupies the left like a large vertical mass, while the pinnacles and the portal are cut further to the right. The framing cuts the top and brings the building very close. At the bottom, the three dark openings form a base which gives weight to the lighter light of the upper parts.

Blues vary from cobalt to pearl gray and purple. The pink and orange touches are not distributed everywhere: they focus on the reliefs that dawn reaches first. This saving in heat makes the transition between night and morning particularly sensitive.

W1348 does not only show an hour: it makes you feel the light progressing, stone by stone, on the facade.

A distinct morning effect in the series

Monet changes canvas as the light moves over the cathedral. In this version, the high areas begin to turn pink, but the portals retain a blue darkness that still makes the end of the night tangible.

A surface constructed in thick layers

The MFA Boston highlights the encrustation of matter in the Cathedrals. The successive layers evoke the roughness of the stone and allow the reliefs to capture light without being defined by a precise drawing.

The Tompkins version of the MFA Boston

The work entered the museum in 1924 thanks to the Arthur Gordon Tompkins collection. It bears inventory number 24.6 and corresponds to number 1348 of the Wildenstein catalog.

A massive tower facing an openwork facade

The left half remains compact and vertical. On the right, the pinnacles and arches multiply the interruptions. The difference between these two masses must remain legible despite the mist.

Cobalt blue, lavender, pale pink and cream

The cold palette clearly dominates. Roses and creams intervene in small touches on the projections, without transforming dawn into midday light.

Matter03

Short impastos and absorbed contours

The stone is constructed by juxtaposition of thick marks. The openings keep flexible edges so that the facade appears caught in the air, not cut out like an architectural elevation.

MFA Boston, inventory 24.6

The Museum of Fine Arts Boston acquired the painting in 1924. It belonged to the Tompkins Collection thanks to the Arthur Gordon Tompkins Fund.

Context03

The facade followed from hour to hour

Monet worked in Rouen in 1892 and 1893, then took over the paintings in Giverny. In 1895, twenty Cathedrals were brought together at Durand-Ruel so that their differences in light could be compared.
