The western facade of the cathedral fills almost the entire canvas. Under the morning light, the stone loses its local color and becomes a screen of milky blues, mauves and pale yellows. The portals remain recognizable, but the sculptures and arches emerge in successive densities rather than in meticulous drawing.
Look at the work
The vertical framing cuts the towers and brings the facade closer together until almost any urban context is removed. The large central portal occupies the bottom, framed by arcatures and niches. The architectural mass advances towards the viewer, while the upper parts fade into cold clarity.
Blue grays dominate, crossed by cream, light ocher, pink and purple. Monet thickens certain areas, leaves others more diffuse and varies the direction of the brush according to the reliefs. Light does not rest on an already constructed building: it seems to build it before our eyes.
W1354 shows that the Rouen series is not a survey of the monument, but a study of the way in which time transforms its presence.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
By cutting the general silhouette of the cathedral, Monet eliminates the postcard effect. The viewer faces a dense vertical surface, organized around the three portals. Variations of light replace the recoil of an urban view.
The stone is predominantly blue, lilac and gray, but very light yellows and pinks prevent it from becoming uniform. Fidelity depends on these subtle passages: too much white would erase the volumes, too much black would harden the sculptures.
The Getty indicates that Monet began this view in 1893 from a rented room facing the cathedral, then reworked it until 1894. The inscription "Claude Monet 94" at the bottom left belongs to this final state.

Only one reference image is used. The museum file of 6,159 × 9,521 px has been reduced to 2,070 × 3,200 px and converted into a real WebP, without artificial enlargement.
The 100.3 × 65.1 cm format accentuates the vertical climb. The dark openings at the bottom give a base to the painting, while the upper reliefs become progressively lighter.
These colors do not fill separate areas. They are juxtaposed on a small scale to suggest changes in plan, hollows in the sculptures and the light that touches the facade.
Some accents are impasto, particularly around illuminated reliefs. Other passages remain more rubbed. The reproduction must vary the paint load in order to maintain the impression of an architecture crossed by air.

The Getty notice identifies this morning version under number 2001.33 and the Wildenstein catalog 1354.
The work is an oil on canvas from 1894 measuring 100.3 × 65.1 cm. It is signed and dated "Claude Monet 94" at the bottom left and bears the title The Portal of Rouen Cathedral in Morning Light at the Getty.
Monet worked opposite the cathedral in 1892 and 1893, then continued the paintings in his studio. Twenty completed versions were selected for the Durand-Ruel exhibition of May 1895, which publicly revealed the coherence of the series.
The painting joined the J. Paul Getty Museum in 2001. Its object number 2001.33, its dimensions and its catalog W1354 allow it to be isolated with certainty among neighboring morning effects.
