Look at the work

A workshop exercise where the plaster takes movement

The horizontal silhouette fills the cardboard: the neckline goes down towards the head, the back forms a long stable line and the four legs punctuate the lower part. The base firmly anchors the model.

The red-brown and blue-green background makes the animal stand out without a uniform outline. The small touches follow the rump, stomach and limbs, giving the still cast an almost living presence.

Horse F216c/JH1082 is an oil on cardboard of 33.1 × 40.9 cm painted in Paris in June 1886. The Van Gogh Museum preserves it under the inventory s0202V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This painting belongs to Parisian studies executed from casts. The horse's volume is based on changes in color and direction of the brush more than on a smooth pattern.

01

The profile makes the shape immediately readable

The back, neck and stomach describe three continuous curves; the inclined head avoids the rigidity of a purely academic presentation.

02

The white of the plaster becomes polychrome

Cream, pink gray, blue and ocher differentiate the planes of the rump, chest and legs without erasing the material of the support.

03

The background acts as a colored shadow

Warm browns surround the back while blue-green accents appear near the limbs, reinforcing the separation between the horse and the base.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The institutional notice documents F216c/JH1082, inventory s0202V1962, format of 33.1 × 40.9 cm and oil on cardboard.

Model

A small plaster cast

Van Gogh does not paint a living horse but a model of study. The fixed pose allows him to observe proportions, volumes and incidences of light.

Support

Cardboard rather than canvas

The museum specifies that cardboard cost less: a practical choice for multiplying painting exercises in the workshop.

Collection

The model itself has been retained

The little plaster horse remained in the Van Gogh family and today belongs, like the painting, to the museum's collection.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the lowered profile of the horse, the small touches which describe the plaster, the colored shadows, the light base and the brown background punctuated with blue-green.

  • Head tilted and neckline curved
  • The long, clear line of the back
  • The four legs separated by shadows
  • The pink and blue touches of the plaster
  • The base placed on the red-brown background
