À propos de l’œuvre
Scène de rue à Montmartre, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · End of February - March 1887 · Montmartre, Paris
Street scene in Montmartre, JH1240Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
In front of the fences of the Impasse des Deux Frères, two men and a little girl cross still semi-rural land; above the gardens, the Moulin à Poivre, masts and wooden structures create a Montmartre in transformation.
Look at the work
The Pepper Mill beyond the palisades
The plank barrier crosses almost the entire width and separates walkers from a collection of gardens, bare trees and buildings. The dark couple in the center advances to the left, while a little girl plays at the right edge.
The mill stands behind the fence, slightly off-center, accompanied by posts, a flagpole and silhouettes of cranes. The clear sky and beige tones keep the space open despite this vertical network.
Sotheby's precisely identifies the place as the impasse des Deux Frères and the Moulin à Poivre, and dates the painting from late February to March 1887. Its authenticity has been confirmed by the Van Gogh Museum.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
This oil on canvas measures 46.1 × 61.3 cm and bears the reference JH1240. No F number is indicated in the sales instructions.
A fence as a horizon
The rustic fence divides the image into two strips. The figures remain in the foreground, while the mill and gardens belong to a separate space.
Montmartre between countryside and construction site
Bare trees, sandy terrain and a mill coexist with gallows and buildings. Van Gogh captures a neighborhood that is still rural but already worked by urbanization.
Figures to give scale
The dark adults and the blue girl measure the height of the fences and masts. Their movement animates a very horizontal composition.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The Sotheby's notice, the bibliography and the examination of the Van Gogh Museum document this work which remained for more than a century in the same French family.
Impasse des Deux Frères
The track was at the foot of the hill, near the mills of Montmartre which Van Gogh painted several times during his stay in Paris.
The Pepper Mill
The small wooden tower beyond the fence helps identify the direction of gaze and distinguishes this scene from the other mills in the series.
A family collection since 1915 -1920
Acquired by a French family in the early 20th century, the painting remained out of public view for many decades.
