Panier de bulbes de jacinthes, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · January -February 1887 · Paris
Basket of hyacinth bulbs, F336Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Six hyacinth bulbs begin to germinate in a brown basket, placed in the center of an oval wooden panel. The support repeats the shape of the basket and transforms this winter still life into an unusual pictorial object.
Look at the work
An oval panel fits exactly the basket and its bulbs
The basket stretches horizontally in the middle of the support. Its braided edge is painted by brown, white and purple lines that follow the curve, while the dark interior moves the light bulbs forward.
The green shoots stand above the earthy envelopes, some already long and others barely out. Around the basket, the yellow-green background radiates in short touches to the black edge of the panel.
Basket of hyacinth bulbs F336/JH1227 is an oil on oval panel of 31.2 × 48.3 cm painted in Paris in January - February 1887. It is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under the number s0063V1962.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The format does not just frame the subject: it takes up its outline. Van Gogh reinforces this correspondence with curved touches in the basket and radiant lines on the background.
The support oval extends the basket oval
Both contours are almost concentric. This construction keeps attention on the central pattern and makes the panel instantly recognizable.
The bulbs are painted as tactile volumes
Brown, gray, cream and purple describe their peels and bumps. Short lines follow their roundness before giving way to green shoots.
Brushstrokes create a neo-impressionist rhythm
The bottom and wicker are made up of small, distinct touches. Their direction reinforces the shapes instead of uniformly covering the surface.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
F336/JH1227, inventory s0063V1962 and oval panel of 31.2 × 48.3 cm identify this still life of bulbs.
The work is painted on wood and not on canvas
The oval panel directly responds to the shape of the basket. Exhibition records indicate that only three other oval paintings by Van Gogh have survived.
Germination becomes the visible sign of time
Painted in January-February, the basket contains several stages of growth: envelopes still closed, green tips and leaves already erect.
The direction of the brush highlights each shape
The lines follow the braiding, rotate around the bulbs then radiate to the bottom. The touch therefore participates directly in the construction.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy should preserve the true oval outline, purple-brown braiding, six distinct bulbs, green shoots, dark earth and radiant touches of the yellow background.
- The very thin black edge of the oval panel
- The light and dark braiding of the basket
- The six bulbs with different peels
- Young green shoots facing upwards
- The yellow-green lines that radiate around the basket
