A faceless self-portrait in the Yellow House

Van Gogh places his wooden and straw chair in the center of an almost empty room. On the seat, a pipe and a tobacco pouch evoke his daily habits. On the left, a box marked "Vincent" contains sprouting bulbs; on the right, the blue edge of a door closes the stage.

The chair is viewed slightly from above and facing right. The lines of the tiles do not converge from a classic perspective: they advance in several directions, which gives the floor a particular tension. The yellows furniture is lined in blue and placed against the turquoise wall.

With a few ordinary objects, Van Gogh constructs a portrait of simplicity, work and absent presence, thought of as the diurnal counterpart of Gauguin's Armchair.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The reproduction must retain the rusticity of the furniture, the complementary contours and the deliberately disjointed space without correcting the perspective.

A very simple chair

The unadorned backrest, the slightly misaligned legs and the straw seat refer to the peasant furniture that Van Gogh had valued since his Dutch period.

Blowjob and tobacco

These familiar objects replace the absent body. Smoke could also evoke the fragility of life in the Dutch still life tradition.

Daytime colors

Yellow, turquoise and red tiles produce a bright light effect, opposed to the night lighting and dark tones of Gauguin's armchair.

Precisely identify the original work

NG3862 and references F498/JH1635 identify the chair started at the end of 1888 then slightly taken over by Van Gogh after his return from the hospital in January 1889.
