Cottage with trees, F91Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A long cottage with whitewashed walls stretches between a dark shed and a clump of trees. Its thatched roof, almost as wide as canvas, sags slightly above small doors and windows, giving the house the presence of an ancient refuge in the Nuenen countryside.
Look at the work
The very elongated format follows the low silhouette of the cottage
The house occupies the entire central part and follows an almost horizontal line. On the left, a dark annex and trees close the view; on the right, the roof descends towards a garden and a landscape opening.
The foreground is made up of dirt, grass and barely separated paths. The white walls are not uniform: gray, beige and olive green show repairs, openings and wear.
Cottage with trees F91/JH809 is a 35.5 × 67 cm oil on canvas painted in Nuenen in June 1885. The work today belongs to a private collection.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Van Gogh chose a format almost twice as wide as it was tall. This proportion transforms the house into a continuous pattern and gives isolated trees the function of vertical punctuations.
The roof is the main shape
Its long brown mass connects the different parts of the home. Dark variations suggest moss, thatch irregularities and sagging of the frame.
The white walls give rhythm to the facade
Clear door, black windows and vertical uprights alternate without symmetry. Each opening reveals a different function of this rural construction.
The trees frame the house without hiding
Foliage, pruned trunks and a higher conifer are distributed behind the roof. They attach the cottage to its land and prevent the horizon from remaining empty.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
F91/JH809, the date June 1885 and the format of 35.5 × 67 cm distinguish this horizontal cottage from other rural houses painted in Nuenen.
The cottages were "human nests" for Van Gogh
He is interested in their age, their mossy roofs and the modest lives they shelter. The building is not a picturesque setting, but the portrait of an inhabited and worked place.
F91 belongs to a campaign of June 1885
After The Potato Eaters, Van Gogh painted several cottages in Nuenen from different angles and formats. F91 can be recognized by its exceptional width.
This work is not La Chaumière F83 of the Van Gogh Museum
F91/JH809 measures 35.5 × 67 cm and is in a private collection. F83/JH777, larger and almost square, represents two dwellings under the same roof.
