Wheat field with blueberriesReproduction of oil painting on canvas

A wind-waving wheat field rises to a line of deep blue hills. A few blueberries scattered in the ears are enough to connect the foreground to the distance and give its identity to this painting from the Fondation Beyeler.

Look at the work

Blueberries are going through a wave of wheat

The mass of the cereals is painted by short yellow, ocher and olive green lines. They rise, tilt and cross like stems in the wind. On the left, a strip of green grass opens the field; in the center and right, small blue touches mark the flowers.

The highest points of wheat stand out in front of the hills. Their light yellow visually plunges into the blue of the relief, while the blueberries bring this color back to the heart of the field. The sea green sky, covered with large white traces, maintains a cool light.

The depth is due to an exchange of colors: blue descends from the hills towards the flowers, the yellow of the wheat rises to the horizon.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Inv.97.1 version is distinguished by its blue hills, pale green sky and small spots of cornflower scattered diagonally across the field.

01

An overflowing field

The wheat fills the majority of the canvas and its oblique touches seem to go beyond the limit of framing. The viewer finds himself placed at the very level of the ears.

02

Blue as a common thread

Blueberries, field shadows and hills share blues of different density. This repetition connects the near and the far.

03

A widely painted sky

The features of the sky are wider than those of wheat. Their horizontal movement momentarily calms the tight energy of the foreground.

What the painter must preserve

The painter must differentiate the directions of the ears, replace the blueberries precisely and maintain the dialogue between the yellows of the field, the blue hills and the sea green sky.

  • The highest yellow ears detached from the hills
  • The irregular distribution of small blueberry touches
  • The strip of green and dark grasses on the left side
  • The large turquoise and white traces of the sky
