Look at the work

An expanse of flowers held by a single large clump of trees

The field occupies more than the lower half and progresses without path or character. Distant trees remain low to the right edge, where much denser foliage enters the frame and balances the vast, luminous opening of the sky.

Poppies are touches of coral and red scattered in greens, blues and pinks. At a distance, the field appears continuous; up close, each color retains its autonomy and produces an almost woven texture.

W1260 transforms the maturity of an oat field into an experience of color: the red of the flowers, the cold greens and the light of the sky vibrate without a closed drawing.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A voluntary asymmetry

The large group of trees is thrown against the right edge. Its dark weight prevents the immense light field from becoming uniform and directs the gaze towards the smaller groves placed in the center of the horizon.

02

A landscape organized by bands

The flowered field, the low line of the trees and the sky form three horizontal zones. Monet connects them with repeats of blue, pink and green so that the planes remain atmospheric rather than geometric.

03

The exact version of the Harn Museum

The format of 66 × 92.7 cm, the 1999.6 inventory and the Wildenstein 1260 reference distinguish this canvas from other fields of oats and poppies painted near Giverny in 1890.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one reference image is used. Exact high definition scanning of W1260 is converted to true 3000 × 2148 px WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A depth without linear perspective

The reduction of red touches, the cooling of the field and the tightening of the groves are enough to create a retreat. Their progression must remain subtle to maintain the openness of the landscape.

Color02

Complements that make the field sparkle

Reds and corals gain intensity on contact with greens and blues. A reproduction that is too uniformly green would lose the luminous effect sought by Monet.

Matter03

A deliberately unvarnished material

The Harn Museum recalls that the glossy varnish added after Monet was removed in 2005. The matte variations, impasto and texture of the canvas therefore directly contribute to the reading of the work.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Harn Museum of Art preserves Oat Field, oil on canvas from 1890, 66 × 92.7 cm, inventory 1999.6 and Wildenstein 1260, gift from Michael A. Singer.

Location01

Les Essarts near Giverny

Oat and poppy fields were in the vicinity of Monet's house. In the late summer of 1890, mature vegetation provided a surface where light and color became the main subject.

Provenance02

Durand-Ruel from October 1890

Paul Durand-Ruel bought the painting directly from Monet in October 1890. In April 1891, it passed through Desmond Fitzgerald for the collection of John Nicholas Brown in the United States.

Conservation03

A precisely documented restoration

The museum stabilized fine cracks, consolidated the edges and cleaned the surface before an international loan. This intervention preserves the differences in texture desired by Monet.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version 1999.6, Wildenstein 1260
  • The large dark foliage that enters through the right edge
  • Coral poppies scattered in blue-green oats
  • The matte material and the small touches visible from the surface

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This large horizontal landscape is suitable for a living room, bedroom or office. An ivory wall, light wood and some sage or coral green textiles extend the palette without weakening the contrast of the tree bed.
