Look at the work

Wild vegetation treated as a big subject

Broken stems and thorny leaves occupy almost the entire lower half. Their dark design intersects above orange, white and blue touches.

A strip of clear path separates the thicket from the curtain of trees. In the distance, a silhouette and a horse give depth and scale to this very close landscape.

Painted in Arles in August 1888, this oil on canvas measuring 59 × 49 cm is cataloged F447/JH1550. It belongs to the Niarchos collection.

Composition, touch and color

Van Gogh chooses a humble and difficult motif: dry plants form neither bouquet nor regular mass. Their tangle becomes a nervous calligraphy on the colored earth.
