The bridge divides the canvas between a faded city and a river full of reflections

Monet places the bridge deck a little below the center. The blue piers descend into the water in the form of short, unstable reflections, while the bridge line remains continuous enough to lead the gaze to the Westminster Towers on the right.

The sky and the Thames take on the same bluish grays, water greens and pale yellows, but their material differs. The mist is treated in flexible and superimposed passages; the river fragments into small horizontal touches which catch the light around the boat.

In this version, the sun is not directly represented: its presence can be read in the creamy yellow shards that slide from the sky towards the surface of the Thames.

A stable bridge line in a mobile atmosphere

The apron must remain readable without becoming a hard outline. Monet constructs it with a succession of blues and greens which blend in places into the mist.

Westminster pushed back to the right edge

The towers of Parliament do not form the central subject. Their lateral position gives depth and balances the more diffuse mass of the buildings on the left bank.

A tiny boat that adjusts the entire scale

The dark hull and white steam take up little surface area, but they bring the foreground closer together and make the distance to the bridge perceptible.
