A train passes through Charing Cross Bridge almost absorbed by fog, while the sun diffuses pink, yellow and blue reflections across the Thames. This oil on canvas of 73 × 104.1 cm, inventory 22:1915 at the Saint Louis Art Museum, is Wildenstein 1548.

Look at the work
The deck forms a long blue-gray band located under the center of the canvas. Its piers descend into the river, but their contours dissolve quickly. On the left, a locomotive and its plume give the measure of the bridge; further on, a few small blue touches indicate the wagons and traffic.
The upper half is occupied by a purple and golden atmosphere where city, smoke and sky become inseparable. The Thames receives more material: the short touches of pink, pale yellow, green and blue make the water sparkle under the arches and bring the light back to the foreground.
W1548 does not describe London behind the fog: Monet paints the fog as the very substance that connects the train, the bridge, the city and the water.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The dimensions of 73 × 104.1 cm, inventory 22:1915 and Wildenstein number 1548 precisely identify this painting. The museum exhibits it in gallery 218 and considers it a work in the public domain.
Monet observed Charing Cross Bridge from the Savoy during his stays in London from 1899 to 1901. He brought the paintings back to Giverny and took them back to the workshop before dating several from 1903.
The white plume on the left is not just a narrative detail. It mixes with natural fog and makes London's industrial air visible, while the tiny wagons accentuate the scale of the bridge.
Reference image
Only one image is used: the official scan of the Saint Louis Art Museum, converted into a real WebP of 3,000 × 2,177 px from a larger source, without artificial enlargement.
Arches and piers appear by changes in value. Reproduction must maintain their structure while allowing the blue of the bridge to blend into the surrounding atmosphere.
The fog combines lilac, blue, pink, beige and greenish yellow. Reducing it to a neutral gray would remove the light effect that distinguishes this version.
The touches of the river are visible, brief and superimposed. Their relief must remain more present than that of the city, in order to give depth to a scene almost without contours.
Documented benchmarks
The Saint Louis Art Museum documents an oil on canvas from 1903, 73 × 104.1 cm, inventory 22:1915 and Wildenstein catalog 1548.
The museum purchased the work from Durand-Ruel in 1915. It is today presented in gallery 218 of the modern collection.
Monet maintains the same point of view and changes the time, fog density and colors. Each canvas is therefore a distinct observation, not an interchangeable repetition.
The number confirmed by the museum's provenance avoids confusion with W1549 and other versions of similar format.
