À propos de l’œuvre

La chaumière, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Vétheuil and Lavacourt · Wildenstein 524a

The W524a Cottagehand painted reproduction

The stone house does not dominate the landscape: it emerges from a garden overflowing with flowers, framed by poplars and crossed by fresh light. This reproduction emphasizes the vibration of the keys rather than too sharp a design.

Look at the work

A house brought to life by flowers and air

Monet places the facade almost in the center, but refuses any quiet symmetry. The triangular gable, the two openings and the fireplace provide a stable framework while the vegetation blurs the line between the architecture and the garden. The house is seen from the front and slightly below: it seems to grow with plants rather than stand out like a monument.

In the foreground, the reds, yellows, blues and greens are placed in small discontinuous touches. At a distance, these marks become roses, herbs and wild flowers; up close, they retain the energy of the paint. Vertical poplars tighten the right edge and lead the eye towards a milky blue sky worked by long moving traces.

The success of this composition is due to the balance between the mineral mass of the cottage and the almost continuous movement of flowers, trees and sky.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The gable as an anchor point

The triangular shape of the facade stabilizes a very lively surface. Its warm grays, ochres and mauves must remain nuanced: a contour that is too dark or a stone that is too uniform would harden the building.

02

A garden made of separate touches

The flowers are not described one by one. Red and yellow accents emerge in bluish, earthy greens; their spacing creates the sensation of a luminous abundance without transforming the foreground into a decorative motif.

03

The air passage

The sky and tall poplars extend the upward movement of the gable. The broken blues, lilacs and whites are mixed without being smoothed in order to maintain the sensation of a changing atmosphere.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The reference clearly shows the colors of the facade, the red accents of the roses and the cold touches of the sky. It makes it possible to distinguish the essential colored relationships to be respected in reproduction.

Composition01

A centered architecture, never fixed

The gable organizes the scene, but the trees and the garden constantly interrupt its contours.

Color02

Reds that wake up the greens

The warm flowers are few in number but frank enough to vibrate the entire plant area.

Matter03

A touch readable at all distances

Impasto and small marks remain visible up close, then recompose into flowers and foliage as you step back.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The museum notice and the catalog raisonné allow us to place this landscape in the Vétheuil period, at a time when Monet was refining his division of the fingerboard.

Location01

Lavacourt, facing Vétheuil

The work is associated with the small village of Lavacourt, on the other bank of the Seine, in the immediate environment where Monet worked from 1878.

Method02

Color before detail

The museum highlights the use of divided touches: seen up close, they remain marks of paint; from a distance, they become flowers, herbs and air circulation.

Conservation03

A work from the Uehara collection

This oil on canvas from 1879 measures 48.5 × 64.5 cm and bears the reference Wildenstein 524a.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Maintain the colored grays of the stone so that the facade remains bright and not monochrome.
  • Maintain the hierarchy between the small floral touches and the wider masses of the sky.
  • Restore the depth of the garden without drawing each plant or closing the light passages.
  • Preserve the verticality of the poplars and the slight movement of the sky around the house.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Its stone grays, muted greens, floral reds and fresh blues are suitable for a natural living room, a library or a bedroom with plant materials. Light wood or patinated gold accompanies the warmth of the facade without competing with flowers.
