À propos de l’œuvre

The Church at Vétheuil, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Vétheuil · 1880 · W531

The Church of Vétheuil W531hand painted reproduction

Seen from the Seine, Notre-Dame Church dominates the houses of Vétheuil and is reflected in a large expanse of calm water. The dark bell tower rises above the roofs, while the banks, boats and figures dissolve into small colored touches. Painted in 1880, this 50.5 × 61 cm oil on canvas is kept at the Southampton City Art Gallery under number 1975/183 and corresponds to Wildenstein 531.

Look at the work

The reflection enlarges the village and connects the church to the surface of the Seine

The town occupies a very compact central strip. The bell tower and the transept form an irregular pyramid above the houses, while the lower half is almost entirely reserved for water and its vertical reflections.

The facades combine cream, pink, gray and blue. In the Seine, these colors fragment into shorter lines mixed with yellow, green and purple; architectural forms then become a luminous vibration rather than an exact double.

The church remains solid in the distance, but its reflection opens and disperses in the foreground: it is this difference in material which animates the entire landscape.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A bell tower as an axis without symmetry

The tower is placed slightly to the right of the center. The houses and trees extend on either side with uneven heights which avoid a frozen monumental composition.

02

A truly painted view from the river

The museum notice specifies that Monet works from a boat. The low point of view explains the importance of water and the direct superposition of the village on the reflection.

03

Reflections painted in small units

Light and dark touches do not copy each building. They group the light into moving areas which give the river its depth.

Read this specific version

The Southampton City Art Gallery's only official image is preserved at its native definition of 1200 × 990 px and then encoded as a real WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Retain the intricate silhouette of the church

The bell tower, nave and buttresses must remain distinct while sharing the same atmospheric yellows and purples.

Color02

Preserve vertical and horizontal reflections

Their crossing makes both the reflected objects and the movement of the surface felt; a simple symmetry would be too mechanical.

Matter03

Keep the little figures on the bank

Their blue and white accents give scale to the village without transforming the landscape into a narrative scene.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Southampton City Art Gallery documents The Church of Vétheuil, oil on canvas from 1880, 50.5 × 61 cm, acquisition 1975/183 and catalog Wildenstein 531.

Viewpoint01

A canvas made from a boat on the Seine

The museum specifies the use of a floating viewpoint. Monet can thus place the water in the foreground and directly observe changes in reflection.

Pattern02

A church studied from several positions

During his years in Vétheuil, Monet painted Notre-Dame according to different seasons and distances. This version is distinguished by the frontal village and the large reflecting pool.

Acquisition03

Purchased by Southampton in 1975

The gallery acquired the work with the assistance of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Museums and Galleries Commission Purchase Grant Fund.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 531 version
  • The dark bell tower above the village
  • The broad reflection of the Seine
  • Figures and boats at the water's edge
