Église de Vétheuil, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Vétheuil under the snow · Musée d'Orsay

Church of Vétheuil W505hand painted reproduction

The bell tower, houses and two small colorful pavilions appear behind a snowy bank. Monet contrasts the blues of the water and shadows with the bright red of a construction, giving this winter landscape an unexpected intensity.

Look at the work

The Vétheuil bell tower in a snowy light

The view first passes through a strip of cold water, then a snow-covered bank before reaching the fence, pavilions and houses. This succession of tight shots raises the gaze to the bell tower. The verticality of the format reinforces this momentum without isolating the church from its daily environment.

Snow is never a uniform white. It contains blues, grays, greens and a few ochres which indicate the humidity of the ground and the irregularities of the shore. In the center, the small red pavilion acts like a warm note: it measures distance, animates the composition and by contrast accentuates the freshness of the atmosphere.

The church dominates Vétheuil without erasing the ordinary bank: Monet brings the architecture, the fences, the melting snow and the light of the river into the same view.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A vertical built in stages

The bell tower is not placed directly on the snow. Water, bank, fence, pavilions, houses then tower form a progression which gives real height and depth to the small format.

02

Red in the heart of winter

The red flag focuses attention, but its color must remain caught in the surrounding blue grays. Too saturated, it would become decorative; too brown, it would lose its luminous role.

03

Colorful whites

Monet uses light canvas, impasto and cold touches to make snow smell. Dark areas of earth and water prevent the lower part from turning into a uniform surface.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The reference image isolates the painted surface and makes the water blues, colored snow whites and central red readable. These temperature differences are essential for the accuracy of reproduction.

Composition01

A format that leads to the bell tower

The horizontal bands in the foreground slow down the gaze before climbing towards the tower.

Color02

A perfectly placed red accent

The small red construction brings a warm fireplace in a range dominated by blues, grays and broken whites.

Matter03

Thick, discontinuous snow

The material alternates covering passages and thinner touches to evoke snow, water and earth which reappears.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The notice from the Musée d'Orsay gives the date, dimensions, inventory and origin of this vertical version of the Vétheuil church.

Architecture01

Notre-Dame de Vétheuil

Monet painted the church which had dominated the village since the Middle Ages, but showed it through the effects of season and light rather than as an architectural study.

Acquisition02

Donation Max and Rosy Kaganovitch

The painting entered the French national collections in 1973 and is today assigned to the Musée d'Orsay.

Reference03

RF 1973 18

The work is signed and dated 1879. It measures 65.5 cm high by 50.5 cm wide and corresponds to Wildenstein number 505.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Maintain the progression of the bodies from the water to the bell tower.
  • Shade snow with blues, grays and ochres rather than pure white.
  • Give the red flag its strength without artificially detaching it from the landscape.
  • Respect the denser material of the bank and the more fluid passages of water.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Its vertical format easily finds a place between two openings, above a console or in a bookcase. The muted blues and broken whites match stone, gray blue or ivory walls; a patinated gold or dark wood frame highlights the small red accent.
