Paysanne près de l'âtre, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · Circa 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands

Peasant near the hearth, F158Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Sitting in profile in front of an open fireplace, a peasant girl peels potatoes by the light of the fire. Van Gogh transforms this modest interior into a close study of work, shadow and light.

Look at the work

A woman at work in the light of the home

The peasant woman occupies the right half of the canvas. Her headdress, her face lowered and her hands barely stand out from her dark clothes; the basket placed in front of her contains the potatoes she prepares.

On the left, a black kettle hangs over some flames. The yellow-green light of the wall and smoke forms an irregular halo, while the chairs, table and opening of the hearth remain in the dark.

Peasant near the hearth F158/JH792 is an oil on canvas mounted on wood measuring 29.3 × 40.3 cm, painted around 1885 in Nuenen. Given by the heirs of Georges Renand in 1988, it is kept at the Musée d'Orsay.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The composition is based on an interior backlight: the fireplace does not illuminate the room evenly, but brings out certain objects and certain parts of the body among greens, browns and blacks.

01

The profile is cut out of the halo

The edge of the nose, cheek and fingers receive some clear accents. However, the face remains absorbed in shadow, which focuses attention on attitude and gesture rather than identity.

02

The kettle balances the figure

Suspended in the dark axis of the fireplace, it responds to the black mass of the woman. Between the two, the flames and the potato container form a short luminous diagonal.

03

Greens give warmth to the room

Van Gogh does not construct light with pure white. It superimposes sulfur yellows, olive greens and smoky grays, then contrasts them with the very deep browns of the furniture.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The notice from the Musée d'Orsay gives the support, dimensions and dating around 1885. The catalogs raisonnés identify this version by F158/JH792, among the studies of peasant figures carried out at the end of Nuenen's stay.

Context

Research related to Potato Eaters

Van Gogh then multiplies the heads, hands and peasant interiors. This woman near the home belongs to this exploration of meals, domestic work and rural life.

Support

A canvas now fixed on wood

The museum describes an oil on canvas mounted on wood. This rigid assembly is part of the material history of the object and distinguishes the current support from a simply stretched canvas.

Collection

A donation entered in Orsay in 1988

The work bears the number RF 1988 10. It was donated to the museum by the heirs of Georges Renand, information recorded in the official notice.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must keep the dark profile of the peasant woman, the hanging kettle, the small fire, the basket of potatoes and above all the green-yellow transitions which make the room bright without brightening it.

  • Face in profile and hands busy
  • The kettle hanging in the fireplace
  • The small flames in the center left
  • The potato basket
  • The green-yellow halo around the smoke
