À propos de l’œuvre

The Church at Vétheuil, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · The western facade of Vétheuil in 1878 · Wildenstein 474

The Church of Vétheuil W474hand painted reproduction

The Notre-Dame de Vétheuil church stands at the top of a narrow staircase, between houses that narrow the view. However, the stone is never still: purples, blues, yellows and roses circulate on the facade like changes of light. Shortly after his installation in the village, Monet transformed this medieval monument into an optical experience announcing his future cathedrals in Rouen.

Look at the work

The climb of the village leads to a vibrant facade

A paved path and a flight of steps start from the lower edge to lead to the entrance to the church. Two small figures, placed on this climb, give the scale of the architecture. The side houses form an irregular corridor whose ocher and gray walls guide the eye towards the portal.

The western facade fills almost the entire upper half. The bell tower rises to the left, while the rose window, arches and buttresses are divided into colored masses rather than archaeological details. The blue sky appears in fragments around the monument and accentuates the warmth of the illuminated stone.

Monet doesn't just describe a church: he shows how light fragments its stone as the eye rises from the street.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A strongly bottom-up perspective

The edges of the houses, the path and the steps converge towards the gate. This device gives the facade a monumental presence despite the modest dimensions of the canvas.

02

The stone translated into complementary colors

Ochres, pinks and yellows are taken up by blues and purples in the shadows. The architectural model is born from their alternation rather than from brown chiaroscuro.

03

A different key depending on the distance

The nearby paving stones and walls receive wide and visible accents. On the facade, tighter touches distinguish openings, reliefs and areas of light.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single reference corresponds to the National Galleries of Scotland NG 2385 inventory. The file measures 1,320 × 1,558 px; it remains at its native definition, without enlargement, then is converted to WebP.

Composition01

A facade held by the axis of the staircase

The portal isn't exactly centered, but the paved climb immediately points towards it. The houses create asymmetrical edges that avoid a fixed frontal composition.

Color02

Blue shadows in a hot stone

Supposedly gray areas contain lilac, blue and green. They make the yellows and pinks of the lit parts vibrate without resorting to black.

Matter03

Open contours in architecture

The arches and buttresses remain recognizable but their limits are crossed by the key. This flexibility is essential to maintain the light effect.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1878, this 65.2 × 55.7 cm oil on canvas is kept at the Scottish National Gallery under the NG 2385 inventory and classified Wildenstein 474.

Installation01

A motive discovered upon arrival in Vétheuil

Monet moved with his family into the village in 1878. This view of the church belongs to the first paintings made on site, before numerous studies of the Seine and the surrounding hillsides.

Architecture02

A church started in the 13th century

The Scottish notice identifies the western facade of the Romanesque then Gothic church of Vétheuil. Monet retains his main divisions but subordinates the details to light and atmospheric conditions.

Don03

The work offered by Isabel M. Traill

The painting entered the Scottish national collections in 1979 thanks to a donation from Mrs Isabel M. Traill, under inventory number NG 2385.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the steep climb of the steps and the small scale of the two figures.
  • Build the stone with clearly differentiated yellows, pinks, blues and purples.
  • Maintain the rose window, the gate and the buttresses without drawing too rigid contours.
  • Keep the side houses as a dark setting that opens onto the facade.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This vertical format brings architectural depth to an entrance, a library or a narrow section of wall. A light oak, walnut or matte gold frame extends the stone tones without competing with blue shadows.
