Cineraries in a pot, F282Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A pot of cineraria visually spills into a network of large green leaves. Dark blue and pale pink flowers cluster at the top, while leaves invade the canvas all the way to the bottom edge.

Look at the work

A plant observed as a tangle of flowers and leaves

The bouquet is neither centered nor frontal. It tilts to the left, while the large leaves fan out and almost make the pot disappear among the stems.

The flowers are indicated by short touches of petrol blue, gray and pink. The leaves, wider, contrast olive, yellow green and red brown on a deep background.

Cineraria in a pot F282/JH1165 is a 54.5 × 45.5 cm oil on canvas kept at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen under the inventory St 92. Its dating and precise location remain debated.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The diagonal cut and the almost unbalanced pot distinguish this still life from the more symmetrical Parisian bouquets. The plant appears to grow beyond the limits of the frame.

01

The bouquet slides to the left edge

The flower mass occupies the upper left quarter, while the leaves facing right create an opposite thrust and maintain balance.

02

The leaves are constructed in large planes

Van Gogh places olive green, yellow and brown bands that follow the veins. Their width contrasts with the small tight touches of the flowers.

03

The red of the signature wakes up the bottom

The name Vincent, painted red in the lower left corner, responds to rust accents scattered among the leaves and stems.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F282/JH1165, the 54.5 × 45.5 cm format and the St 92 inventory identify the work. Its chronology deserves careful formulation.

Dating

Between 1885 and 1886

The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen lists 1885, while the F and JH catalogs generally classify it as a still life of 1886.

Research

Nuenen or Paris

A technical study by the Van Gogh Museum highlighted that his style might correspond more to Nuenen than to Paris. The exact location is therefore not presented as certain.

Collection

The St 92 number

The painting is on loan from the Stichting Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, resulting from the donation of Mrs. EY van Beek-van Hoorn Janssen in 1951.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the diagonal of the bouquet, the dark blue and pink petals, the widely brushed leaves, the intertwined stems, the partially hidden pot and the red signature.

  • The compact bouquet in the upper left corner
  • Blue petals punctuated with pale pink
  • Large olive green leaves with visible veins
  • The pot absorbed by the stems and shadows
  • The Vincent signature in red
