Belle-Île-en-Mer W1110hand painted reproduction

A chain of black and red rocks cuts through a cold sea in front of the high cliffs of Belle-Île. The heavy sky, the foam and the long blue-green touches give the landscape severe power. Signed and dated Claude Monet 86, this oil on canvas measuring 60.5 × 81.7 cm is kept at the Rodin museum under number P.07329 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1110.

Look at the work

The reefs lead the eye to the heart of the wild coast

The first rock starts from the bottom of the canvas then extends through several points to the cliffs. This dark diagonal divides the sea and creates a succession of planes, from the nearby foam to the distant capes.

Blue, green and white are applied in short strokes to the water. The reefs mix red-brown, purple and black. In the sky, bluish grays and very pale pinks diffuse changing light rather than uniform lighting.

Monet does not describe a tourist panorama: he transforms the coast into a clash of directions, between the horizontal sea, the oblique rocks and the massive cliffs.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A diagonal of rocks as a framework

The reefs start from the foreground and almost reach the coast. They serve as a visual path in the middle of a sea without boats or figures.

02

The sea painted as an active surface

Horizontal touches change length and color around rocks. Foam whites signal areas where water meets stone.

03

A light retained by the overcast weather

Values remain close in the sky and cliffs, while water greens and rock reds bring the main contrasts.

Read this specific version

Only one official image of W1110 is used in the listing and as the sole Shopify media. The real WebP measures 1,632 × 1,200 px and comes from the Rodin Museum collections portal.

Composition01

Preserve the foreground reef chain

It must remain readable in several masses, without merging into a single dark band.

Color02

Preserve the foam whites

Their irregular rhythm reveals the movement of the sea around the rocks.

Matter03

Keep the dark cliff to the right

Its mass closes the bay and balances the large body of water on the left.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Rodin Museum documents Belle-Île-en-Mer, oil on canvas from 1886, 60.5 × 81.7 cm, inventory P.07329, signed and dated, and listed Wildenstein 1110.

Campaign01

One of thirty-nine canvases painted on Belle-Île

Monet stayed on the Breton coast in 1886 and directly faced the variations of wind, sea and light of the wild coast.

Exchange02

A work offered to Auguste Rodin in 1888

After the exhibition of the series at Georges Petit in 1887, Monet gave this painting to Rodin as part of an exchange between the two artists.

Collection03

A painting that remains in Rodin's universe

Formerly kept at the Villa des Brillants in Meudon, the work today belongs to the Rodin museum under number P.07329.

A palette designed with the room

This horizontal navy is suitable for a living room, office or library. A blue gray, deep green or off-white wall and a dark frame emphasize its density.
