White clematis W1144hand painted reproduction

Bunches of white clematis descend among dense foliage, without mud, horizon or architecture. The flowers dissolve into broken whites, pale yellows, pinks and purples, while the greens vary from bright jade to almost black. Painted in 1887, this oil on vertical canvas measuring 92 × 52 cm is kept at the Marmottan Monet museum under number 5011 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1144.

Look at the work

A wall of flowers that completely fills the eye

The composition shows neither ground nor sky. The white bouquets follow one another from top to bottom and are partially cut by the edges, giving the impression that the vegetation continues out of the frame. A darker brown stem discreetly crosses the lower part.

The petals are never painted a uniform white. Cream, lemon yellow, powder pink and light purple give them relief, while cold and warm greens build the leaves. The signature placed at the bottom right mixes with the foliage.

By removing all context, Monet transforms clematis into an immersive experience: the canvas no longer describes a plant placed in front of the viewer, it surrounds it with flowers and light.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A vertical and decorative format

The narrow height follows the growth and fall of the plant. The National Gallery of Victoria highlights the influence of Japanese art and textile designs in this elongated framing.

02

Whites shaped by color

The petals receive yellow, pink, green and mauve notes. These variations suggest shade, transparency and thickness without resorting to neutral gray.

03

A very close depth

Some flowers stand out clearly, others disappear into the foliage. This alternation creates several planes despite the absence of a traditional perspective.

Read this specific version

A single exact image of W1144 is used throughout the file and as the sole media for the product. The real WebP measures 556 × 1024 px, best freely accessible reliable public definition identified for this version, preserved without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Retain total lack of horizon

The plant pattern should fill the canvas to all four edges. Introducing an identifiable background would reduce the enveloping effect of the composition.

Color02

Preserve the colors in the petals

The whites rest on a mosaic of cream, yellow, pink and purple. Making them uniform would cause the luminous vibration of W1144 to lose.

Matter03

Keep areas very dark green

They give the flowers their shine and structure the vertical descent. Without these depths, the composition would become flat and excessively clear.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The National Gallery of Victoria chronology dedicated to Monet identifies White clematis, oil on canvas from 1887, 92 × 52 cm, kept at the Marmottan Monet Museum under number 5011 and listed as Wildenstein 1144.

Gardening01

A rare plant chosen by Monet for Giverny

In 1887, Monet's passion for gardening asserted itself. He orders specialized and rare species; the new clematis is one of the treasures he introduces into his garden.

Influence02

A format linked to Japanese art and textile design

The vertical elongation and cut pattern at the edges keep the work away from traditional still life. The plant becomes a continuous decorative surface.

Collection03

Legacy of Michel Monet in 1966

White Clematis joins the Marmottan Monet museum with the legacy of the artist's son. The work is inventoried there under number 5011.

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1144 version
  • The vertical format of 92 × 52 cm
  • White petals tinged with pink and yellow
  • The dense foliage without sky or horizon
