From the top of a cliff, two women contemplate a pale blue sea strewn with sailboats. The green slopes form a wide V which opens the view towards the horizon, while a red veil lifted by the wind animates the small group on the left. Painted in 1882, this oil on canvas measuring 60 × 100 cm is kept in the National Gallery of Art under number 1985.64.27 and corresponds to Wildenstein 754.

A bird's eye view where the cliff opens onto the sea

Two emerald green hills occupy the lower third and converge towards a narrow central opening. On the left slope, one woman sits and another stands. Their small scale measures the site without looking away from the maritime immensity.

The sea and sky share milky blues, turquoise, mauves and touches of peach. Darker triangles and dashes indicate several dozen boats, including a steamer. Brushstrokes remain visible and even reveal the weft of the canvas in certain areas of the sky.

The height of the viewpoint transforms the cliff into a natural balcony: the gaze descends between the slopes, joins the boats then gets lost in a light where the sea and the sky almost seem to merge.

The standing woman wears a veil or red scarf that lifts behind her hat. This brief warm accent is enough to suggest the sea breeze and make the scene come true.

A flotilla built by signs

The boats are not detailed. Triangles, lines and small green reflections make them readable from a distance while preserving the atmospheric unity of the surface.

They must remain integrated on the left slope. Enlarging them would change the scale of the landscape and transform the navy into a genre scene.

Keep the central passage between the slopes

The opening of the V is the main axis of depth. Its width and position naturally lead the eye towards boats.

Matter03

Respect the chromatic continuity of the sky and water

Blue, turquoise, mauve and peach circulate in both areas. A horizon that is too harsh would destroy the diffuse light effect sought by Monet.
