The Beach in Pourville, Marmottan W777hand painted reproduction

In Pourville, the sun descends behind a misty sky and colors the English Channel with yellows, pinks and silvery greens. Monet places the cliffs on the left, then opens the canvas wide towards the sea. In the foreground, the purple and brown beach receives the last reflections of the day; the coast, water and sky are connected by a quick touch that captures the moment before the light disappears.

Look at the work

A pink light crosses the sky and the sea while the cliff becomes a cold silhouette

The coast starts from the left edge and recedes in a succession of irregular planes. The chalky faces are never simply white: they mix purple, beige, pink and blue. A thin dark line highlights their summit and detaches them from the milky sky.

The water occupies the center and leads to the horizon. The horizontal yellow and green touches capture the last light, then cool down near the beach. The oblique shore of the foreground gives an entry into the composition without closing the vast marine expanse.

The sunset is not an isolated disk: it diffuses into the sky, repeats itself over the sea and transforms even into the shadows of the beach.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A rib placed against the light

The cliff concentrates the darkest values. This lateral mass gives weight to the composition and allows light passages of sky and water to appear brighter without using pure white.

02

Three bands that remain permeable

Beach, sea and sky could form rigid zones. Monet connects them with colors taken from one plane to another: the pink of the sky returns to the water, the purple of the ground touches the cliff, and the sea green reaches the horizon.

03

A touch adapted to each surface

The oblique gestures follow the shore, the short touches describe the accidents of the cliff and the horizontal lines make the sea vibrate. Reproduction should retain these distinct directions rather than smoothing the entire canvas.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single reference image measures 1,500 × 1,197 px. It corresponds to the canvas of the Marmottan Monet museum and has been encoded as a real WebP to its native definition, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Cliff occupies less than a third of the field

Its presence is strong but limited. It serves as a framework for light without dominating the landscape. The relationship between this dark mass and the marine opening must remain precise in all formats.

Color02

Salmon pink, sea green and purple

The palette doesn't rest on a spectacular orange. Warm tones are veiled in gray and balanced by blue-green. This restraint produces the humid and foggy sensation specific to Pourville.

Matter03

Visible covers in the foreground

The beach receives superimposed gestures of brown, mauve and blue. They give a denser material than that of the sky. These irregularities must be kept to avoid a uniform and heavy foreground.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These landmarks concern precisely La Plage à Pourville, setting sun of the Marmottan Monet museum, inventory 5008 and Wildenstein 777.

Identification01

Marmottan Monet Museum 5008, W777

This oil on canvas from 1882 measures 60 × 73 cm. Inventory number 5008 and Wildenstein catalog 777 distinguish this version from other sunsets painted in Pourville the same year.

Norman stay02

A pattern painted directly from the beach

Monet stayed several times in Pourville in 1882. He worked facing the cliffs and the English Channel, moving his easel according to the tide, the wind and the orientation of the light.

Collection03

A work kept at the Marmottan Monet museum

The painting belongs to the Parisian collection of the Marmottan Monet museum. It is referenced there under number 5008, which allows it to be unambiguously linked to this precise composition.
