The Downstream Cliff with the Gate and the Needle W908 - Monethand painted reproduction

From the cliff of Amont, Monet looks west at Étretat Bay. The Porte d'Aval advances like a massive arch from the right, while the Aiguille stands behind it in a pink, blue and cream mist. Despite the monumental size of the rocks, the execution remains light and almost sketched. This oil on canvas measuring 60.2 × 81.5 cm is placed at the Kunstmuseum Basel under number G 1970.9. It corresponds to Wildenstein 908.

Look at the work

The arch and the needle of Étretat appear less like immobile monuments than like colorful volumes modeled by the sea air

The Aval cliff enters from the right edge and ends with the dark and narrow opening of the Gate. Its orange summit receives a warm light, while its gray-blue wall is covered with horizontal touches. Behind it, the Needle stands out in two values: a dark purple base and a lit pink tip.

The sea occupies a relatively low band, animated by greens, blues and pink reflections. Small red and white sails give the scale of the rocks. The sky, very wide open, mixes transparent blues, creams and pink clouds; it envelops the two formations rather than cutting them out.

The Monet's Coast exhibition at the Städel Museum highlights that Monet probably constructed this painting from sketches made on the cliff of Upstream. Even in this sketched execution, the atmospheric light remains convincing and the Needle clearly emerges behind the arch.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The high viewpoint reorganizes the emblems of Étretat

The Gate is not seen from the beach but from the other cliff. Its opening narrows in perspective, while the Needle separates clearly and becomes an autonomous vertical in the bay.

02

Warm colors carry light

Salmon pink, cream and orange land on the peaks and in the sky. They respond to the gray blues of chalk and the greens of the sea, producing soft light rather than spectacular contrast.

03

Tiny veils prevent the image from becoming abstract

A few red and white triangles punctuate the horizon. They give scale and recall maritime activity, while remaining discreet enough to let the rocks dominate.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single image exactly represents inventory G 1970.9. The Städel Museum reference file measures 1,920 × 1,411 px; it remains at its native definition, without artificial enlargement, then is encoded in real WebP.

Composition01

Respect the interlocking of the Door and the Needle

The Needle must appear behind the arch without being confused with it. Their deviation and difference in value determine the exact depth of W908.

Color02

Preserve the generous opening of heaven

The sky represents more than half of the composition. Reducing or saturating it would reduce the atmospheric effect and make the rocks unnecessarily heavy.

Matter03

Keep an open touch on the cliff

The gray-blue passages let the preparation and neighboring colors breathe. Too finished geological details would contradict the almost sketched character noted by the Städel Museum.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Städel Museum and the Kunstmuseum Basel document The Downstream Cliff with the Door and the Needle, oil on canvas from 1884, 60.2 × 81.5 cm, inventory G 1970.9 and catalog Wildenstein 908.

Viewpoint01

From the Upstream Cliff, across the bay

Monet looks towards the Downstream Gate and the Needle from a high location. This choice visually brings the two formations together while revealing their separation in the sea.

Method02

A canvas probably made from sketches

The Monet's Coast notice combines W908 with studies carried out on the Upstream cliff. The drawing ensures the position of the rocks, then the free touch restores the air, distance and light.

Collection03

Deposit of the Dr hc Emile Dreyfus Foundation since 1970

The work is kept at the Kunstmuseum Basel under number G 1970.9. It appears in the catalog raisonné under Wildenstein 908.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This view of Étretat is suitable for a bright living room, bedroom or office. A smoky blue, mineral pink or warm gray wall and a light oak frame extend the marine atmosphere without weighing down the rocks.
