Look at the work

Cliff connects plateau life to sea opening

The promontory enters from the left and descends towards a narrow beach. Buildings and small figures occupy its summit. On the right, the sea opens wide around an isolated sailboat.

The chalk receives white, pink, blue and green; the plateau mixes denser yellows and greens. The clear sky and the gray-blue sea respond to each other, separated by a deliberately soft horizon line.

In W759, the monumentality of the cliff remains light: the light colors, the figures of the plateau and the sail prevent the rock mass from closing the view.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A natural site already inhabited

Houses and walkers punctuate the summit. Monet does not erase them: he reduces them to signs that make the scale of the cliff immediately perceptible.

02

The diagonal of the promontory

The coast descends from left to right and leads towards the sail. This large oblique balances the vast horizontal surface of the sea.

03

Multicolored chalk

Pink, blue, green and cream cross the wall. These variations reflect shadows, vegetation and light without resorting to academic modeling.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W759 is used. The real WebP measures 1,200 × 962 px and retains figures, houses and sail without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Keep the small figures at the top

They must remain simple vertical accents, visible but secondary. Detailing them excessively would break the scale relationship.

Color02

Keep the sail insulated

The boat serves as a counterpoint to the cliff. Its position and small size are essential to the balance of the right half.

Matter03

Keep the chalk colored

White should never cover the underlying pinks, blues and greens. This superposition gives the rock its light and volume.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Kunsthaus Zürich documents La Falaise à Dieppe, oil on canvas from 1882, 66 × 82 cm, signed Claude Monet 82 lower left, inventory 2252 and Wildenstein 759.

Location01

The coast west of Dieppe

The Kunsthaus notice places the cliff above the beach, west of the Norman town. Monet observes the site from the shore.

Collection02

At the Kunsthaus since 1932

The work was entered thanks to the Vereinigung Zürcher Kunstfreunde in 1932 and today bears inventory number 2252.

Version03

The Wildenstein 759 canvas

The houses on the plateau, the large oblique cliff and the unique sail distinguish this composition from the neighboring views painted in Pourville.
