From Étretat beach, the sea rises towards the cliff of Amont, whose natural arch appears in a pink and blue mist. The Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde chapel and some dark silhouettes punctuate the ridge; below, tiny boats slide near the shore. Painted in 1885, this oil on canvas measuring 50 × 61 cm is kept at the Marmottan Monet museum under number 5010 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1011.

The monumental cliff dissolves in a pale morning light

The left half is occupied by the sea, brushed with blue-gray, sea green and white. On the right, the beach forms a purple curve which leads towards the chalky wall; its blue and pink verticals bring out the arch without a hard outline.

The sky covers almost the entire upper part and mixes cold yellow, pale green, blue and pink. On the ridge, two or three black accents are enough to indicate the chapel and the human presence, which makes the cliff even larger.

Monet recognizes the arch and the chapel by a few precise signs, then entrusts the mixture of colors with the real sensation of chalk, foam and morning humidity.

A diagonal that connects sea, beach and cliff

The shore starts from the lower right corner and goes up towards the center. This oblique line organizes the depth while giving the impression that the sea is entering the landscape.

A painted rock without local brown

The cliff receives light pinks, blues and yellows. These colors reflect the light reflected on the chalk and prevent it from becoming an opaque mass.

Tiny landmarks on the ridge

The chapel and figures are only dark touches, but their scale measures the height of the plateau and stabilizes the upper edge of the composition.

These passages distinguish the work from the bluer or brighter sunny views of Étretat. They must not become beige or orange.

Matter03

Keep foam impasto in the foreground

A few thick white touches catch the light on the water. They give essential relief to an otherwise very clear and fluid surface.

This small version remains in the artist's studio, then joins the Marmottan Monet museum through the bequest of Michel Monet in 1966.
