From the height of Pourville, Monet watches a clear cliff plunge towards the English Channel. The rock mass, crossed by green, pink and purple, occupies almost the entire canvas; the sea narrows into a blue-gray band and the morning sky merges with a damp light. The pattern is solid, but each touch seems moved by the wind.

The clear cliff advances in a blue-gray English Channel under the cold light of an 1897 morning

The foreground is made up of short, oblique touches that suggest the grass from the cliff edge. Further on, the rock is built by cream, pink, mauve and green passages. Monet does not draw each stratum: he makes the volume felt by changes in temperature and by the direction of the brushstrokes.

The sea occupies a narrow surface, but its blues and grays open up the entire composition. Near the horizon, the paler sky dissolves in an atmosphere laden with humidity. This contrast between the very worked cliff and the more fluid distance gives the landscape its breadth.

Morning does not whiten the coast: it reveals pinks, greens and purples that the stronger light would have brought together otherwise.

Diffused light erases sharp contrasts and brings the sky closer to the sea. Depth therefore depends on small differences in blue and gray rather than a black horizon outline.
